Police Blotter: Up to No Good on Good Friday, Phony Holy Rollers, Duped at Dunne

FRIDAY, APRIL 22

Up to No Good on Good Friday

A woman preparing for Good Friday services at Redeemer Church, in the 4900 block of 158th Street, found a basement door pried open, with a duffel bag and cans of alcohol nearby. She told police the door is most commonly used for entry by PADS guests. The door appeared to have been pried open, causing $300 in damage. A smashed basement window was also found.

Phony Holy Rollers

Two of the three people who were collecting donations for Repairer of the Breach Ministries at the intersection of 159th and Cicero were former employees, Pastor Otis Davis, Jr. told police. Nathaniel Newsome, 53, of the 1500 block of W. 51st Street in Chicago, along with his next door neighbor Earl Manual, 54, had been fired for stealing from the company, Davis told police. The two were seen seeking donations using fliers and buckets from the church, according to police. Newsome was charged with possession of stolen property, as he held the fliers. Manual and Christine Manual, 48, were each charged with soliciting without a business license. The money they collected, totaling $273.61, was entered into evidence inventory.

Duped Again At Dunne?

A woman told police that after she used her debit card at George Dunne Golf Course, four fraudulent purchases totaling $499 made in New York appeared on her account. The woman told police she decided to report it after she read about other similar instances.

SUNDAY, APRIL 17

Smash Talking

After a man confronted the owner of a vehicle about a previous argument, he took a brick and smashed it through the owner's windshield, he told police. Police could not find the man accused of breaking the windshield, in the 16400 block of Rob Roy Drive.

THURSDAY, APRIL 14

Phony Bucks Bought iPhone

A man sold his iPhone via a CraigsList ad, and when the customer paid for it, he used five fake $100 bills, the seller told police. The man was advised to contact the Secret Service, which confirmed the counterfeit bills.
