Couple Robbed at Park Told 'Don't Make It a Murder'

Young couple robbed in Gene Leonard Park on Sunday.

Oak Forest police are looking for two men who may have robbed a young couple in Gene Leonard Park on Sunday with a gun, warning, “This is a robbery, don’t make it a murder.”

A man told police that he and his girlfriend were sitting in an SUV around 10 p.m. when another man approached the window asking for a lighter. Before long that man allegedly pressed a gun to the young man's neck, cocked it and made his threat.

Police said the gunman made off on foot with the young man's wallet, cell phone and car keys while an accomplice grabbed the young woman’s purse and headed west on 149th Street.

The gunman was described as black, 6-feet tall with dark baggy clothing, short dreads and “very bad teeth,” his accomplice as black, 5-feet, 10-inches tall with a brown hat and baggy clothing.

The young couple took bicycles out of the back of their car and headed for a nearby house, where they called police, according to the report.

Minutes later, a resident out walking his dog called police and provided a similar description of two men running through yards. As they fled that resident's barking dog, one of them lost a shoe that was later logged as evidence, police said.

A K9 search of the area was done without success, but police said they lifted a fingerprint from the exterior of the car where the gunman first poked his head in.

An attempt by the victim’s cell phone provider to pinpoint the location of his cell phone was also unsuccessful.
