Police Blotter: Backpack, Bike Taken in Separate Burglaries

SUNDAY, JULY 24

Criminal Damage to Property

A resident in the 5700 block of Vine Street reported that someone shot a BB gun pellet through her front picture window between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Jewel Heist

Rufus Buckhalter Jr., 41, of the 1500 block of Sunrise Drive in DeKalb, was charged with felony retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers responded to a retail theft at Jewel-Osco, 5616 W. 159th St., and pulled over the car in the 4300 block of 159th Street. According to the report, Buckhalter had taken bottles of liquor from the store around 7 p.m. The liquor was valued at more than $200. During processing, a pipe with copper mesh, commonly used for smoking narcotics, was found on Buckhalter, police said.

Backpack Theft Reported

A resident in the 15400 block of Warwick Drive reported a backpack had been stolen from her car overnight. The bag contained three season passes to Six Flags, according to the report.

Criminal Damage

Someone reported that a vacant home in the 5100 block of Farmsley Court had been broken into and vandalized sometime between July 1 and July 22. Officers found a glass door had been shattered and there was graffiti on the walls.

THURSDAY, JULY 21

Attempted Burglary

A resident in the 5100 block of Newport Drive reported hearing a loud noise around 3:30 a.m. The resident saw someone enter the garage and saw that the garage door had been kicked in. The offender got away as the resident gave chase. Nothing was stolen from the garage, police said.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20

Burglary from Barn

A resident in the 15600 block of Waverly Avenue reported someone had taken a go-cart frame from a barn overnight. The barn does not have any doors, according to the report.

TUESDAY, JULY 19

Theft from Car

A resident in the 15700 block of Terrace Drive reported that his driver's license, GPS and cash had been taken from his car between July 16 and 17.

MONDAY, JULY 18

Garage Burglary

A resident in the 6100 block of Forestview Drive reported that someone had opened the overhead garage door and stole a bicycle from his garage around 5:30 p.m.

Criminal Trespass

John C. Steiner, 45, of the 15800 block of Terrace Drive, was charged with criminal trespassing. The manager of Dunkin' Donuts, 5159 W. 159th St., told Steiner many times to stay off the property, according to the report. The manager called police when Steiner came to the store around 8 a.m.

SATURDAY, JULY 16

Robbery, Battery

A man reported that three men had struck him in the face, taken his money and run into an apartment building in the 4800 block of 157th Street around 12:30 a.m. The suspects were not found.

Battery and Phone Harassment

David B. Kendall, 22, of the 15600 block of Bramblewood Road in Oak Forest, was charged with domestic battery, harassment by phone and criminal damage to vehicle.

In a parking lot in the 15600 block of Harlem Avenue, around 11 p.m., Kendall struck a woman in the chest and then pulled her by the arm, police said. He also struck the woman’s windshield with a closed fist, causing it to crack, and threw her personal items into the street. Witnesses told police that Kendall threatened them when they came to the woman’s aid, saying, “I know where you live,” and took off on foot.

While police questioned the woman, she received 35 phone calls from Kendall, and in several of them he threatened to surprise her at work and “bust up” her face, according to the report. Kendall turned himself over to police on July 18 at 6:30 a.m., police said.
