IRS Troubles for Oak Forest Man After Identity Stolen: Blotter

Oak Forest police report, Nov. 12.

A note from the IRS sent to a 45-year-old Oak Forest reporting more than $1,000 owed in back taxes came as an unwelcome surprise, according to a report.

IRS auditors were claiming the man owed $1,3501 in back backs for 2011 from a 1099 form filed that year for work he never did but that had used his identity, according to an Oak Forest police report.

The victim reported the crime to Oak Forest cops on Nov. 12, the report states.

Someone had opened an account with Capital One using the Oak Forest's man identity and had charged more than $5,224, the report states. A 1099 form also was filled out using his identity.

The man contacted Capital One, which investigated and sent him a letter advising him that they had cleared the debt.

However, the IRS sent the note about the 1099 and hasn't supplied him with a copy of the form, the report states.

Police blotter information is provided by the Oak Forest Police Department. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions taken on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.
