Family Escapes Unharmed after Lightning Strikes Oak Forest Apartment

Residents of the apartment building were evacuated safely after lightning struck outside the bedroom of one resident's daughter.

An Oak Forest family is shaken, but safe, after lightning struck their building and sparked a fire in the attic during Tuesday evening's powerful storms.

The lightning struck just outside his children's bedroom in the 15700 block of Peggy Lane, Neil Obeidat told ABC-7, and his family scrambled to get out as smoke filled the rooms.

"My wife was in the shower when that happened," Obeidat said. "My daughter grabbed one of the twins and she went outside. When my wife came out, she grabbed the other twin and she went downstairs."

All other occupants of the building were evacuated, but no one was injured. Residents will be kept out of the building while smoke and water damage is repaired.
