Daughter Tricked by Scammer Targeting Business: Blotter

Oak Forest police report, May 10.

A 24-year-old New Lenox woman fell victim to a telephone scam, according to a report.

The victim received a call from a number with a 630 area code where the caller claimed to be from "Commonwealth Edison." The call was intended for her parents' workplace in Oak Forest and redirected to her cell phone. She told police her parents don’t speak English well and that's the reason she took the call.

The scammer said the business’ electricity would be shut off within an hour if a past due payment wasn’t transferred, according to the report. She was told to send the payment through MoneyPak.

While transferring the money, the victim realized it was a scam and unsuccessfully tried to stop the $300 transaction.

Police called the number and a male voice on the other end claimed to be from a company called “Central Communications” before disconnecting, according to the report. The same person then said he only spoke Spanish when the officer called back.
