Do It Yourself

Progress for Juli is defined by all the little things we take for granted that she is beginning to do for herself...again.

I get asked on a daily basis, “How is your daughter doing?” The question usually
comes from someone who is aware that Juli has a long struggle but isn’t around
her enough to see it.  Polite conversations being what they are, I search for
the exact answer in twenty words or less as the accumulation of three years
swirls in my mind and can only respond, “She’s doing really, really good”.  If
the conversation continues I throw in just enough qualifiers to ‘good’ so they
get the picture that I am speaking from the perspective of her low point, not
her pre-accident point.  I am never sure how much they expect from her recovery
and what ‘good’ means to them.  And honestly it means something different to me all the time too.  Those of you reading along know of course that Juliana faces
a lifetime of challenges to achieve a life she is happy to live.  For you, the
background has been laid bare and you are seeing this from ground zero as well.
Casual and polite acquaintances might expect that means ‘it’s all better’ but we
know this reconstruction is far more complicated than that and the devil may be
in the details but they were defined by a Master Craftsman.  It is in those
details that Juliana’s ground zero is taking the shape of an independent
structure making the near future very exciting to experience.  (to read more go to www.forjuliana.org
