Two Teams, One Mission: Football Teams Collect Food for Needy

Two Oak Forest flag football teams collected canned goods during their championship game Sunday, Nov. 10.

Two flag football teams might have been battling to bring home a trophy, but that didn't stop them from uniting for a common cause.

The Oak Forest Park District's Buccaneers and Redskins took to the field at Jesk Park Nov. 10 for the championship, and on the sidelines a different effort was sparked. The two teams asked friends and family to bring a canned good to the game—and together, the teams collected 270 pounds of food for donation to the St. Damian Food Pantry.

"Amazing what two teams and sidelines can do when we all come together!" wrote Buccanner mom Valerie Shalati on the Oak Forest Patch Facebook page. "The day was very heartwarming on so many levels!"

The Redskins won, 20–12. Buccaneer mom Patricia Florek, who vowed to cut and donate her hair if the Bucs won, stuck to her word.
