Brews and Bald Heads at Blarney Stone for St. Baldrick's

Blarney Stone Pub led its own St. Baldrick's Day effort Saturday, March 22. Find out how much they raised.

The suds were flowing and locks were falling at Blarney Stone Pub Saturday, March 22.

Roughly 50 people went bald to raise money for St. Baldrick's Day. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a national non-profit organization that raises money for childhood cancer research. Volunteers with the organization typically host special events in which they shave their heads in solidarity with children who lost their hair during cancer treatment.

Annie Malec teared up as her 8-year-old son Mason had his head shaved. Mason volunteered for the cause after a classmate at Central Park School in Midlothian battled leukemia, Malec said.

"I'm so proud of him," Malec said. "It's important to teach him what other kids are going through."

For the third year in a row, Hometown resident Dan McGrail chopped eight inches of his locks for donation to children suffering from alopecia (hair loss). McGrail donated 15 inches for the first year, 19 inches the second. Leading up to Saturday's event, McGrail skipped haircuts for a year.

"I like helping the kids," McGrail said. "Nothing's worse than hearing about a kid with a terrible affliction."

Preliminary totals show the event raised $8,179 of the event's $25,000 goal. Donations are still being accepted.
