earth and sky

earth and sky
January 15-February 8, 2014
Reception: January 17 | 6-9pm

Union Street Gallery's landscape exhibit, earth and sky, is the first in a proposed series that will bring together a small, rotating group of the Gallery's Studio Artists, Guild Artists, and artists from outside the Gallery's family. Each show will be unified by a different common theme or style, and will offer a select cluster of artists an opportunity to present more works at one time than scheduled exhibits normally do.

Exhibits that portray landscape and nature are reminders of the beauty and inspiration that so many natural places provide, not only for artists, but for everyone who seeks peace and quiet; clarity; the grandeur, intimacy and timeless mysteries that exist beyond our daily human routines and concerns.

The six artists of earth and sky - Eve Jensen, Oscar Linares, Chuck Michaels, Stuart Pearson, Richard Schmidt and Marikay Peter Witlock - have long been inspired by nature, and dedicated to creating substantial bodies of images of woods, prairies and fields, mountains, lakes and streams, individual plant forms and long sky vistas.  Through drawings, paintings and photographs, they interpret and convey the cumulative power of land and sky existing together; the conversation between them; light filtering through petals; shadows falling across rocks; alternating patterns of branches and clouds; colors bouncing around from mountain to water; with all the other factors of weather or crops or winding roads mixed in.

Curated by Claudia Craemer, earth and sky opens at Union Street Gallery on the 2nd floor, 1527 Otto Boulevard, Chicago Heights, on January 15 and runs through February 8, 2014, with an Artists' Reception on Friday, January 17 from 6-9pm which is free and open to the public.
