Weekly Patch-up: Another Gas Station, Upgrade Update, Smooth Roads Ahead

Your round-up of Oak Forest Patch stories, for the week of March 6–13.

Phew. Your Patch finally recovered from the whirlwind you all call the Fleadh. What a day!

Perhaps you were too busy figuring out how you would bundle up for the parade, or putting the finishing touches on your parade float. Whatever the reason, 'tis the Irish season and we're feeling festive enough to get you up to speed on your Patch.

  • Kids in the hall: Did you catch our last week? Find out who took the top honors in the south 'burbs.
  • "Another gas station?" Some residents seem pretty surprised that the aldermen would sign off on a third fueling stop at the intersection of 159th and Central. Check out the from last Tuesday's city council meeting.
  • Don't try this at home. Patch editors from Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, and Palos sampled 11 different Paczki from 3 different bakeries—and felt the sugar rush and crash afterward.
  • Upgrade update. Work continues at Acorn Public Library. If you've stopped in recently, you might have noticed that the work has moved to the upper level. Director Paul Mills explains in his blog
  • ...Speaking of Whiz Kids. This week's were a favorite. The Silver Spurs 4-H club has some fans. Give it a read and see if you'll become one.
  • It's back! After a brief hiatus, our feature "Wednesday with..." has returned. This week, we feature CIC TV station programmer Dave Poninski. We'll take your nominations for the next edition of the column.
  • Trying to ice the ice industry. Four packaged ice companies were named in a suit filed by the Illinois Attorney General's Office saying the companies, as well as former Tinley Ice president Harold M. Teehan III and current president Timothy Teehan, worked together to illegally split up the packaged ice market in northern and central Illinois. Read more at Tinley Park Patch.
  • Woo, baby! We didn't believe it, either, until we met Amanda Usterbowski, an Oak Forest 21-year-old who didn't know she was pregnant
  • Smooth roads ahead? Did your street make the list of those the city wants to fix up with funds from its Motor Fuel Tax fund?
  • Beware these bad guys. Two men posed as her new neighbors, then stole from an elderly woman in the Fieldcrest subdivision. Police and the Crime Prevention Committee warned residents to be careful.
