'Sweet-smelling' Outhouse Coming to Oak Forest Preserve

New outhouses at Bremen Grove Forest Preserve in Oak Forest will provide some relief from related odors.

Fear the outhouse no more, Oak Forest. Forest preserve visitors will no longer have to cringe when they have to go.

A new $41,000 outhouse coming to Bremen Grove Forest Preserve will feature "sweet smelling" technology—better ventilation, more airflow, and pipes to help with the odor, reports the Chicago Tribune.

The 200-square-foot outhouse will be installed by mid-November, according to the report. The U.S. Forest Service designed the technology to reduce the odor inside the outhouse.

There's no getting around the purpose they serve, but they're more advanced than those visitors have used in the past.

"Even if they don't smell like gardenias, they don't stink," Chris Slattery, director of planning and development for the Cook County Forest Preserve District told Tribune reporters.

The outhouse will have two toilets and will be open year-round.
