Splish Splash Pool Faces Uncertain Future

In dire need of major repairs, Splish Splash Pool in Midlothian could face closure following this summer, unless cost-effective repairs take place in the off season. A public meeting will be held Sept. 13 to discuss possibilities.

Residents looking to cool off at Splish Splash Pool in Midlothian next summer, might be left high and dry if the pool can't scrounge up enough funding for much-needed repairs. The pool, which is open to the public, needed several repairs this summer just to open and faces even more work should the facility remain open past this year.

“We're in need of massive repairs,” said Terry Knapp, Aquatic and Safety Coordinator of the Midlowthian Park District.

Knapp said that she was unsure exactly how much the repairs would cost, but that a clearer picture would come after an assessment by the State of Illinois later this month.

In the hopes of keeping the pool open, there will be an open meeting at the Don Preston Recreation Center, 14500 S. Kostner, on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Knapp said the meeting will focus mainly on brainstorming ways to ease the cost of repairs.

“We're looking for people for help,” Knapp said. “To see if anybody knows things such as, if you know people who are in the industry for cement removal, and or cement people, or electrical people or plumbing people and if they're willing to work a deal or something like that for things we have to have repaired.

“We're just trying to keep this puppy open,” Knapp said.
