Rabid Bat Found South of Dunne Golf Course in Tinley Park

The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control reported the finding Tuesday. Find out what you should do to stay safe.

A rabid bat was found Tuesday just south of Oak Forest's George Dunne Golf Course in Tinley Park, according to the village.

The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control reported the finding Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the 16400 block of Beverly Avenue in Tinley Park, a village press release stated. The Illinois State Public Health Laboratory determined the bat was rabid after an examination, the release added.

Officials are warning residents to take extra caution with their pets and animals outdoors, as well as their own safety, the release stated. The following are tips to keep in mind, according to the village:

  • Dogs, cats and ferrets should be kept on a leash outside their homes.
  • Pets should be up to date with their rabies vaccination. If the animal hasn't been vaccinated, it should be inoculated immediately.
  • Do not handle bats, skunks or other wild animals.
If you are bitten by or exposed to a bat, you should contact your doctor immediately, according to the county's animal control department. That agency also should be contacted if you find down or dead bats or skunks in the area. The phone number for county animal control is 708-974-6140.
