Oak Forest Sprints Back Into Special Olympics Torch Run

Volunteers, led by the Oak Forest Police Department, will take turns carrying the torch through the city for this year's state summer games. Find out the route they will take.

The Oak Forest Police Department will lead volunteers through city streets Tuesday for its leg of the 2013 Illinois Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run.

Oak Forest's leg should begin around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the intersection of 147th Street and Cicero Avenue, and last for about a half hour. The start time is dependent on other running times of the other routes and could start a little earlier or later.

The route, which stretches about 2 miles, goes south down Cicero Avenue, then west on 159th Street to Central Avenue. The Oak Forest route is colored red in the accompanying map. (Go to the Mapquest page if you're unable to see the map in this article.) There will be an after-run get together at Jewel, with pizza being provided by Home Run Inn.

Traffic will be directed, and there will be rolling street closings as the torch run passes along the affected roads.

Police departments in neighboring towns also will be participating in the run, and their routes could affect Oak Forest traffic. Those routes are marked on the map in the following colors:

  • Alsip-Crestwood: Yellow (starts at 2 p.m.)
  • Orland Park: Green (starts at 2:30 p.m.)
  • Orland Hills: Light green (starts at 3:10 p.m.)
  • Tinley Park: Blue (starts at 3:25 p.m.)
  • FBI (Orland Park office): Orange (starts at 3:55)

After an absence of about eight years, the Oak Forest Police Department has rejoined participating in the Special Olympics Torch Run. Since May, the department has helped raise about $1,200 for the organization. Go to the Illinois Special Olympics page for information on how to donate and volunteer.

The 2013 Illinois Special Olympics Summer Games run from June 14 to 17 at Illinois State University in Normal.
