Oak Forest Farmers Market Kicks Off Season

The 2014 Oak Forest farmers market opened for the season on Saturday, May 31. Did you stop by?

We hear if you're looking for the salsa, you have to get there early—or risk that it's been sold-out.

The Oak Forest Farmers Market kicked off May 31 in its new location near the Oak Forest Metra station.

While some vendors didn't appear as scheduled, those available seemed to be a hit with the shoppers. Other vendors missing this week should make an appearance in next week's market, organizers said.

The market is held Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon.

What did you think? Will you go back next week?

We set our alarms for 6:30 to make sure we got up and out to be amongst the first to be at the new farmers market. Due to our work schedules, we were never able to make it to the Farmers Market in the past. We were disappointed though when we pulled into the CVS parking lot and only saw only a handful of vendors. We thought maybe we were early and due to the day and location change vendors were running behind, so to waste some time, we drove out to the Mokena Farmers Market. We came back to the Oak Forest Farmers Market around 9 a.m. and were disappointed to still see only a few vendors. While we will be back next week, hopefully there will be more vendors. My family and I love farmers markets and generally spend an hour or two at them. We visit the Tinley Park Farmers Market almost every weekend. We are looking forward to keeping our money local and in Oak Forest, so we really hope to see more vendors next weekend. We're grateful to the people who have worked so hard to make the new farmers market a success. The day, time and location change should help increase it's success. Thank you for what you've done, and keep up the good work. Hopefully there'll be more vendors next week!

Melissa-great feedback and thank you for taking the time to stop by (twice). I was disappointed as well at the lack of vendors especially some very key vendors. I can assure you that the market committee will be working extra hard this week to track those missing vendors down and to lock them in. Overall, the amount of foot traffic at the market was impressive which tells us that the community truly wants a market and will support it. If there is one thing I've learned about vendors it's that while they are skeptical of new markets, they also talk to each other. My guess is that we will be getting phone calls this week from vendors who heard about our foot traffic and now want to be part of the market. Thanks again for your feedback and your support. See you and hopefully many others again this coming weekend!

Personally drove out to Glenwood this morning to speak with the owners of Zeldenrust Farms. They are a definite lock and will be at our market this coming Saturday. Keep in mind though that almost no crops are in as of today except for spinach and maybe asparagus. Zeldenrust will bring what they have harvested so far and if you stop and talk with them they will be able to give you some idea of when other crops will be harvested. Also, I understand that our fruit vendor out of South Haven contacted the park district and apologized for missing last Saturday assuring us he will be there this coming Saturday.
