The National Weather Service is encouraging Chicago-area residents to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors today.

An air quality alert has been issued for Cook, DuPage, Lake, McHenry, Will, Kane, Kendall and Grundy counties through midnight tonight.

The alert means weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and particulate levels are expected to be at or above a level that makes it unhealthy for "sensitive groups," according to the National Weather Service.

Active children and adults, and especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity today.

Residents are also encouraged to reduce their pollution levels. Tips on how to reduce emission can be found at www.cleantheair.org. Information on the air quality index levels can be found at www.airnow.gov.
