Get to Know: Local Dog Trainer Tracy Matzinger

Patch even brought along our own pooch to try out Matzinger's method.

When Tracy Matzinger adopted her dogs from a local shelter, she didn't know they came with a few quirks.

But she figured it out shortly after the paperwork was final.

Matzinger found herself with some pooch problems. But instead of giving up on her new furry friends and returning them to the shelter, she sought out the help and tools to solve the puzzle. Now she wants to help others do the same.

Matzinger has started up a dog and puppy training program through the Oak Forest Park District. The classes use a clicker and treat method to teach basic skills like sit, stay, and stay, and also address problem behaviors like biting, nipping, chewing and jumping. The clicker method is similar to what's used with dolphin training, substituting a clicker for a whistle.

If a dog is being fostered, Matzinger offers a discount with no time limit. If a dog has been adopted within three months, the program cost is discounted $20, for a total of $85 for the seven-week course. All other dogs are $105 for the seven-week program. Classes are held Monday evenings and Thursday afternoons at the Don Gorman Fieldhouse.

Matzinger hopes the program will help dog owners learn to handle their dogs and any behaviors, instead of surrendering them to a shelter.
