Weather Doesn't Stop D228 Spirit Showdown Fans
Cold and snowy weather didn’t stop students and staff from gathering for the District 228 3rd Annual Spirit Showdown event on Wednesday, February 5. Bleachers were full when the event kicked off shortly after 6 p.m.
The fee to enter the Showdown was a canned good, and many students donated filled bags and boxes of canned goods. Nearly 2,000 items in all were gathered for Together We Cope in Tinley Park.
In a jam packed two hours, schools competed against each other in dodge ball, tug-o-war, relay race, and guys dance. Spirit points were given for attendance, school color wear, and overall school spirit as attendees watched the competitions and a mascot dance-off and drum line. The overall winner of the evening was Oak Forest High School. Winners by event point or school spirit were:

“The Spirit Showdown is a great opportunity for schools to have some friendly competition. I feel our district is just four small schools that work perfectly together, and it’s nice to have a chance to meet with friends from the other schools. I’m a senior and have so much fun at Spirit Showdowns. I graduate in May and I’m sad I won’t be here next year to enjoy this event,” stated Jasmine Silva, Bremen High School
Spirit Showdown began a few years ago when students district-wide asked for an opportunity to be together for a fun evening. Nearly 100 volunteers step up each year to work at the Showdown as announcers, scorekeepers, canned goods collectors, referees, supervisors and security, event judges, competition participants, and photographers.
