Oak Forest HS Students Meet Author Sherman Alexie

Nine Oak Forest High School students attended author Sherman Alexie’s session at the Chicago Humanities Festival held on November 9.  This event was co-sponsored by the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom and the Freedom to Read Foundation.  Alexie, who is most notably the author of The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, is celebrated for exploring Native American culture, and urges his readers to look beyond stereotypes that are associated with reservation life.   Alexie is also famous for being one of the most-banned living authors, a fact that makes him a popular speaker in the struggle against censorship.  Seen in this photo are Author Sherman Alexie, Oak Forest High School teacher Jennifer Schanz, Oak Forest High School students Abby Correa, Anna Baggili, Molly Schuman and Helwa Saleh.  Students Mikayla Smith, Sabrina Dorencz, Emily Keegan, Bree Barry and Savannah Beall also attended the event.
