Oak Forest HS Selected for Teen Safe Driving Program

Associate Principal Dan Dunne announced that Oak Forest High School has been selected once again to participate in the 2013-2014 Teen Safe Driving Program.

Over the course of the Operation Teen Safe driving program, the State of Illinois has seen traffic fatalities in teens drop from 85 in 2010 to 71 in 2012.  Hopefully, through further education, these fatality rates can go even lower.

In preparation for beginning the program, which starts December 1, the Oak Forest High School community will identify issues relating to traffic safety in their community (i.e., underage drinking, driving unbuckled, driving impaired, driving distracted.)  A program will be implemented to educate the students of Oak Forest High School about driving and its dangers.

Oak Forest High School will receive $2,000 in grant funding from IDOT/DTS and from the Allstate Foundation, to develop and implement their program.  Winners are selected from each region and each will receive prize money to host a post-prom party.

The top five schools from each region are also invited to send students to a “Driving Skills for Life, Ride and Drive” event, which is sponsored by the Ford Motor Company.  Students will observe professional drivers on three separate courses demonstrating critical driving skills.  Teens will then have the opportunity to drive the same courses with the professional driver sitting in the passenger seat to provide tips and assistance.  The “Driving Skills for Life Ride and Drive” events are held at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago and the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield. Areas in which the students have an opportunity to learn improved driving skills include:  Hazard Recognition/Accident Avoidance, Vehicle Handling/Skid Control and Speed/Space Management.
