The Voice of Democracy is an annual scholarship program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).  It is open to students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private, parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories.  Applicants must complete an audio essay based on a specific theme for the year.  Judging is based on originality, content and delivery.

State-level winners receive scholarships between $1,000 and $16,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.  After competing against all state-level first place winners, the First Place winner at the national level receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.

The theme for 2014-15 will be “Why Veterans are Important to Our Nation’s History and Future.”  Entry forms will be available around March 1, 2014. http://www.vfw.org/Community/Voice-of-Democracy/
