District 228 Students Participate in SSC's STEM Symposium
Bremen High School District 228 students participated in South Suburban College’s First STEM Symposium. Students in the district have been exposed to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through inquiry based assignments and hands-on learning activities.
The President Obama Administration launched the Educate to Innovate Initiative to move American students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math achievement over the next decade. This campaign includes the efforts not only of the Federal Government, but also of leading companies, foundations, non-profits, and science and engineering societies who have come forward to answer the President’s call for all-hands-on-deck. It is critical to creating educational experiences that project-based, hands-on and build a love of lifelong learning.
SSC Dean of Mathematics and Science, Dr. Anna Helwig and STEM Symposium coordinator stated, “We wanted to give students of all ages the opportunity to see the wide variety of STEM-related careers, try some things out and learn about what is necessary to pursue careers in these fields.” Highlights from the event included: Mr. Freeze from Fermilab providing a very exciting finale; SSC’s own Welding Simulator, representatives from GE, COMED, and Wrigley Company, as well as many SSC programs and the National Society of Black Engineers.
