Comic Book Artist Says Math, Science and Art Merge to Create Superheros

The Oak Forest High School Academic and Talented Program students got quite a treat Tuesday when comic book artist Jerry DeCaire came to speak to students about how math, science and art merge to create an illustration of the superhero.

DeCaire is an artist/illustrator of various comic books such as:  Thor, Hawkeye, Wolverine, Conan the Barbarian, IronMan, Nick Fury, Agent of Shield and the Phantom.

DeCaire created a very mathematic way of creating his art which helps him meet his comic book deadlines.  In this methodology, he recognizes the four P’s of drawing:  perspective, proportion, physique and position.

As he lectured and explained his mathematic methodology to drawing, he drew Superman, Hulk, Captain America and the Silver Surfer.
