Step 2: Video/Photo Gallery Look at Pool Construction

During the second phase of pool construction at the Hufnagl residence in New Lenox, the pool base is going down—85-100 bags of Pool-Krete—in preparation for the liner to be installed on top by the Aqua Pools team.

Andy Hufnagl and his wife, Angela, decided to put a 20x44 in-ground pool in their back yard, in part so their daughter, Autumn, could train and play with her friends. Autumn is a member of the Lincoln-Way Gators swim team. The Hufnagls live in New Lenox. During the second phase of construction, the Aqua Pools team spent a day putting the pool base down in preparation for the liner to be installed on top. The job of troweling—spreading 85-100 bags of Pool-Krete—fell on the shoulders of Tom Eiler. He said he has worked on more than 1,400 pool projects since Aqua Pools opened for business in 1978. Jim Eiler Jr. serves as vice president and chief salesman for the family-run business, which operates throughout the Southland. "After the liner is…

Kingsberry Owner Holds the Secret to Good Pancakes

John Mantas won't give up the secret to his pancakes. Readers selected his pancakes as their favorite in Oak Forest.

For John Mantas, running a restaurant is a family tradition.  "I went to school and then I got kind of pushed into because of the family, working after school. And then I got to liking it," Mantas said. Mantas, a Palos Park resident, bought the building that now houses the Kingsberry Waffle and Pancake House in 1997 and opened his first restaurant, a steak house, the next year. By 2001, he opened what would be the first Kingsberry location in Oak Forest. He also owns a second location in Flossmoor. Oak Forest has its fair share of breakfast joints. So what sets Mantas' pancakes apart? "I can’t give you the secret. We do it a little bit different than everyone else does," Mantas said. He credits good ingredients and well-trained cooks. …

Unless you're in the habit of eating CFLs by the truckload, there's not enough Hg in them to make any difference to your health from routine exposure to an occassional broken bulb.   more ›

Switch Off: Incandescent Bulbs Soon Will Burn Out for Good

As a result of U.S. government energy-efficiency standards, traditional incandescent light bulbs are being phased out. Local electrical contractor Tom Sullivan says consumers need to be educated so they can make the right choices moving forward.

Don’t be surprised if some of those old jokes about how many blankety-blanks it takes to change a light bulb bounce back into the comedic mainstream of life. No kidding. As a result of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, traditional incandescent light bulbs …
