The Host
By: Stephanie Meyer
I know that from the moment that you saw the title of this review, most of you non-Twilight fans already had an opinion based on the author. Now, I'm a big fan of the Twilight Saga, but that just opens a whole new can of worms that I don't even want to get into, but those that clicked on this link thinking that I was going to tear Stephanie Meyer apart because of her other series, you couldn't be more wrong.
I love, love, love, love LOVE this book.
It's set in the future. An alien race has invaded the Earth, and taken over the human race. A 'soul' is implanted into a human body and the soul literally takes it over and erases the person once living there. Melanie Stryder, with her brother, Jamie, are some of the few remaining fully human people on the planet. Then Melanie gets captured, and she is added to the list of lost humans. Except that, she refuses to relinquish her body to the soul, Wanderer. Together, the two go on a journey to find Jamie and Melanie's boyfriend, Jared.
I can't quite pinpoint what I love so much about this book. Maybe it's the perfect plotting in the second half of the novel, or the four part love triangle (or would that be a love square?).
My only real complaint is that the first half of the novel can at sometimes be a little hard to follow, and a little slow paced but it is so worth it to get through. The second half is perfection and addicting. The love between the characters, both romantically and family, is beautiful and heartfelt and the storyline is amazing.
Another thing about the novel I found to be really cool is that there is a set of songs listed in the back of the book that Stephanie Meyer associates with each of the different chapters of the book. She has said that music really helps her writing process and allowing the fans to get an inside look at how she perceives music in her novel helps the novel come to life that much more.
On top of it all it's going to be a movie in about two months and it's rumored that Stephanie Meyer is writing a sequel. You have no idea how excited I am for both of them!
