Woman In Labor Votes On Way To Hospital
A 21-year-old south suburban woman found time to vote in her first presidential election, even as her baby was beginning to make its way into the world.
OUTSIDE CHICAGO, IL -- The contractions were coming five minutes apart, her water had broken—but a local woman took a detour while en route to deliver her first child, a daughter.
Galicia Malone, 21, popped into Precinct 88 around 8:30 a.m., to cast her vote at the aptly named New Life Celebration Church, in south suburban Dolton.
“I never voted before so this made a major difference in my life,” Malone told WBBM Newsradio, as quoted by CBS. “And I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter.”
As she worked her way through the ballot, her contractions increased in frequency and intensity.
“I was just trying to read and breathe, read and breathe,” she told the reporter. “That’s what I kept telling myself, ‘Read and breathe, read and breathe.'”
She finished voting, then drove herself to the hospital.
"If only all voters showed such determination to vote," said Cook County Clerk David Orr in a release. "My hat goes off to Galicia for not letting anything get in the way of voting. What a terrific example she is showing for the next generation, especially her new son or daughter."

You have NEVER heard or read VERIFED infomation that states these beliefs, NOR have you EVER HEARD PRESIDENT OBAMA say anything like this. Where do you get this from and why are you saying it when it is absolutely NOT TRUE?? Oh, I know... from MITT - another fabricator and liar - unable to stand on facts and truth. Just lies and negativity. Ok, no need to explain. Talk about being against FREEDOM & JOB CREATION - MITT tells women they can't earn too much money and that they can't have the freedom to handle their body or make decisions about their own bodies. Yeah, i think you just got the names confused. GO PRESIDENT OBAMA - Truths and freedoms!

Somehow we can't get rid of Mittbain mopes, dopes and dolts, even on election day.
Talk with us when we see his tax returns and when Ryan gets a bill signed into law....he's been in Congress for 13 years and gotten nothing done. Mittbain has had his net worth increased by $100 million in the last 4 years....What is he complaining about?

I'm quite sure as a male you may not be aware, but when a woman goes into labor, for the most part, it's not thoroughly thought out or planned. I highly doubt any woman (Well, I'll speak for myself--when my times comes, I'm positive) "plans" to go into labor at an exact time and location and magically have a baby. It's unexpected and I'm sure the majority of women don't do early voting thinking "Oh, I'm going to go into labor ON election day at this time so I'd better vote early". Doesn't quite work like that. Would be nice if it did :-) .

We're not celebrating all pregnant women. Being pregnant is not what made her amazing. Don't minimize this. She's amazing because although she was in labor, she was determined to vote and not let the efforts of those who have died for this very right be in vain-come hell or high waters OR contractions. No one posting said that she was the only amazing voter, but without doubt, she is one of the amazing voters! Her determination shows a commendable level of strength. Stop being jealous, Jack.

MAT
3:49 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2012
For those genuinely concerned, driving oneself to the hospital while in labor is neither an indictment nor judgement on the marital status of the couple or whether the father's in the picture. When I went into labor with my youngest, my husband, a truck driver, was at work and I was home with my, then, only daughter who was 5. I drove myself to the hospital, she rode shotgun, got checked in then called my husband. They called him in off the road we proceeded to welcome our baby girl into the world.
For the rest of you basking in your self-important judgement, get over your irrelevant selves.
BTW, high five to that new mother who understands what's at stake.

Read her story. Why she didn't do early voting or where her husband was, is irrelevant to the point of the story. When you ask that question, you are assuming that she could have known she would be in labor on Election Day. The story didn't mention that she was psychic, so I'm assuming she didn't know. Does she have to be interrogated because she is now rightfully deemed amazing? It won't harm you if someone other than yourself is called amazing. She doesn't need to give you her life story or resume in order for the comments on her being amazing to be valid. She's amazing and that it.

Go ahead and keep making your comments. your doing nothing but showing how stupid and uneducated you yourselves are. And FYI look up the stats. There is a HIGHER PERCENTAGE of white people on food stamps then blacks. educate your self a little more befor you speak on the behalf of someone that you know absolutly nothing about.

Some people love to be negative & miserable, & can never find the positive in good things. No where did it say she was a single mother,on welfare, nor whether her precinct had early voting;yet we see negative remarks; people who ASSUME! That word just makes them the 1st part of it! This story is a HUMAN INTEREST story, NOT a POLITICAL or PERSONAL bashing post!.so to all of you who still feel it is & think you know it all,why don't you put yourself in her shoes & see how well you would have done.Babies come when they are ready.Mother's like Galicia, who are up early & to the polls by 8:30 am are determined to set a POSITIVE example,& do NOT deserve this type of bashing! Galicia Malone is 21 yrs.YOUNG & already knows she wants her "First time vote" to be "A stepping stone for her daughter" This was a significant emotional event for her.It made a major difference in her life. Why try to take that away?Voting may be political,in that it is a part of " politics", & is a "Constitutional right",but that doesn't mean that POLITICS have to be discussed; just because she decided to set an example! She was smarter than those who used this forum for their own political agendas. I must say even the Cook County Clerk, had it right when he said " My hat's off to you Galicia".She set an example we can all learn from; she didn't have to do any Political bashing, or even divulge her candidate of choice! Galicia Malone. You have represented your generation well! God bless you and your child~

I don't get why everyone is so upset about the comment asking where was her husband. I'm a black single mom and dads these days need to step up, black and white. It's unfortunate that we (women) cannot first make sure the man is stable and responsible, before we get involved and get pregnant. We need to use birth control. Again, I'm a single mom, but it's the children you would benefit with both parents. I am not saying they will be harmed per se, because I also grew up without a father, but it's good for kids to have both parents.
Rachel
1:15 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2012
The reason people are getting upset is because those 'husband commentators' aren't asking out of care. They aren't asking because they think men need to step up. They are asking because they are nosy and automatically assume that a pregnant black woman does not have a boyfriend or husband.

I agree with you here - I've lived with my mother, then about 3 other women as I've been aging over the years.
oooh please
3:27 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2012
Why can't women first make sure a man is stable and responsible? women are expert at that, some would even say genetically inclined, to select the strongest male to mate with. Selective reproduction, this is how every other species operates and thrives.
I just don't understand why humans can't be as smart as penguins when it comes to this stuff...

The reason why commentators (including myself) are upset is because the Dad questions, has zero to do with the article. The article is clearly praising her for taking the time out of her labor experience, to go and vote, and here comes this idiot to ask a personal question. Perhaps, we should ask the interrogator is his Momma dropped him on his head?

Well said, Crystal - in all of the elections I've gone to, I'd take a look at the names of the people, and if I knew a name I'd hear a lot more on (issues, experience), I'd probably OPT for that person. Ergo, while I registered to vote as a DEMOCRAT, I may vote REPUBLICAN or any other party (if the moment seems keen).

All woman are not helpless; and you need not know everything about the young woman are any one that is mention in the news....ESPECIALLY when you are not putting out anything BUT HOT AIR. You all NEVER seems to see good in anybody other than yourself...and you don't see good there. You never know what the future holds for any one. Be very CAREFUL how you talk and treat people. These comments are hilariously sad.
First off, does it really matter who she voted for? The great thing about America is that you can vote for who you want. Screaming Romney or Obama at someone is petty and childish. If she voted for Romney, more power to her. If she voted for Obama, more power to her.
Second, who cares if she has a husband? Maybe she has a boyfriend? Maybe she is a single mother? Maybe the 'father' up and ran? Maybe she was careless? It doesn't matter which route she is going. It really isn't relative to this article.
Third, it is truly disheartening to see people jumping to conclusions because a person is black. It is rude and disrespectful to assume she is on welfare or is automatically a hand-out receiver because she isn't white. Please people. Get off your high horses.
I for one would like to offer sincere congratulations. Voting for the first time is a momentous occasion (as is voting for this monumental election). I know I wouldn't be able to keep my cool while going in to labor. Galicia, no matter who you voted for, hold your head high. After all, casting your vote is one of the best things you can do as a person.

Bravo. You said what I wanted to, right below you, I think, but was not as tactful as you were in saying so. Same mindset, though. I applaud anyone, regardless of party, who would take such lengths to vote. Yes, if she were white, we wouldn't be hearing chuckles from the 'Others', as I call certain people. We would be hearing solely how determined she was. This is unfair, for obvious reasons. Anyone of color, gay, a feminist, in the entertainment industry (generally), etc...is going to have accusations thrown at them. A white, upper middle class male, though, would be referred to as 'determined', etc. Only positive adjectives. I applaud this new mother, regardless of whom she voted for. Some of us, who don't tend to judge others by proclaiming our own self righteousness to the world, only doing so to put them down, keep them down, etc..know better. I'm proud to say this and say it with all humility, no better no worse, no more American or no less, just plain old humility. Brava for your comment.

WOW! Since when do you speculate as to someones business that you know nothing about? Hummmm....sounds like gossiping. It's no ones business why her husband, boyfriend or whoever is not with her. What a sad group most of you are. She has the right to vote just as like you , you bunch of ignorants. Only ignorance would make you write such things. If she was white voting for Romney she would be an hero in your eyes. There's a name for people like you where I come from. And it's not a nice name. Do you know that there are more white people receiving government hand outs in this country than any minority?
And guess what some of them are voting for Romney. They would never vote for the well educated , inteligent man of character, he is not white. And no they didn't just start to get food stamps and housing they were receiving it during the Bush administration. I bet most of you don't even have jobs. Go find one. There's plenty our there that pay as much at least as unemployment benefits!!!! Oh by the way I am white but unlike you my parents were good people who taught me manners compassion and integrity and to respect people regardless of the color of their skin or their background. Congratulations Galicia. Good luck with your baby and may God Bless you both.

If she were white, it could be Obama OR Romney she's voting for. But it's ok. The liberal media enjoys painting the picture like this! We know who she's voting for. It's amazing that the media will go to any length to promote Obama. And this was a subliminal attempt to do just that! We're not stupid!
garypeter
12:38 pm on Wednesday, November 7, 2012
This is for Richard, who left a comment for the above. You say, Richard, that the liberal media likes painting a picture of something you feel is unfair. Untrue, indeed. (not like Fox ever reinterprets the truth, huh?) However, we do know, given what the 'liberal media' wants to paint, though, that there have been no effigy's of Romney being hung in absentia, whereas Obama has been hung, along with his family, more times than we could count, here. He has had every stereotype, negative stereotypes, thrown at him, from watermelon's, to KFC, to 'Amos and Andy' mock ups, to Obama in chains, getting of slave ship from Africa (mistakenly saying it was from the 'Western African Nation of Kenya'??????..Western?) and the list goes on. I don't see anti Mormon effigies. Have you? I don't see anything, stereotypically 'anti Romney' anywhere. Have you. No, it's the liberal media covering it all up, but we all know that if any anti Romney anything was going on, anything uncivilized, that is, (like a public lynching, even in effigy and en absentia) Fox would have been on it, immediately. So, carry on, Richard, about the 'liberal' media as that excuse has flown, a long time ago, just about when the 1,237th effigy was lynched. Blah, Blah, Blah. If Romney wins, tonight, one of the major reasons shall be that he is black, and you can deny it all you want, but it's true and you know it, I know it, we all know it. Move on.

Great for her that she managed to vote while in labor on the way to the hospital. The scary thing was that SHE drove herself. She could have caused an accident and seriously hurt herself her child and someone else if she lost control of her car while she was on LABOR!! Why wasn't there someone else to drive her? It doesn't matter who, just that it was irresponsible to drive herself. But good for her, she voted.

I hope she voted for Obama because a vote for Romney is a vote to bust unions who fight for higher pay, not to give equal pay to women and to eliminate minimum wage. Lower wages for all will make more jobs, thats why Romney won't answer some of the questions when asked. A good example is the union busting in Wisconsin. No unions mean companies can pay employees lower wages and hire more.

Good for you, Galicia! I know what people are muttering under their breathe, you putting off birth to vote, and many, (mostly the 'evil ones') are thinking that you did this because you wanted to vote for Obama, a President 'of color.' I'm sure they're also saying that if he hadn't been 'of color' that you wouldn't have bothered. I don't think it makes a difference WHY you voted, but you did, and at great discomfort to yourself, regardless of whom you voted for (yes, there are black people do vote for Republicans...Alan Keyes comes to mind). Point is, you took your right to vote, something many in the US take for granted and don't do, seriously, and did your duty as an American. People who don't vote, in my opinion, should have no right to complain when they disagree with something as when they flushed their right to vote right down the proverbial, political toilet they also flushed away their right to complain. Even those who cannot vote, but help by canvassing, funding, campaigning for someone, have the right to speak, but those whom remain flaccid, have no rights whatsoever. On this note, a applaud you and wish you and your newborn and family, all the best. You are an example to so many of us. (and never mind what the 'Others' might or might not be saying about your motivation, as I remember my first presidential election, in 1984, and it's the say I became, so to speak, an adult. A day I won't ever forget). Peace!

It's a shame that after she reads some of these comments, some of her joy will be taken away from her by a bunch of ignorant people. Why do people have to be so judgemental? Its her FIRST time voting, she did a WONDERFUL thing, no matter who it is she's voting for. None of you know her!!!! Its disgusting how many of you are just sooo ignorant. Especially assuming the worst about her personal life. The point is...she voted. She didn't make excuses like a lot of lazy people out there as to why she couldn't go vote. I am sure with Obama reelected everything will turn out alright for her and her baby. If Romney is elected, not so good for women, the poor, the average, union workers, and the middle class. The wealthy will make out ok, after all they will have helped put him in office and they are not spending all this money because they like his programs. Come to think about it, what programs, all I heard was how he planed to lower taxes for the wealthy. Maybe thats why the wealthy donated so much money for his campaign

Interesting dialog going on here. She said this is the first time she voted and she is 21 years of age. Did she not think to vote for local or state officials during the years from 18-21? I applaude her fortitude but question her motive. I also wonder why she would potentially endanger her child because of possible complications during birth.

WOW! I am amazed at the ignorance of so many highly educated americans. A new life was brought into this world. The mother didn't neglect her right as an american citizen to vote. Regardless of the early voting priveldge, she pressed her way to make sure her vote counted. Some of your comments were disrespectful, and disgraceful. You don't know her situation or her lifestyle but yet you are posting comments judging her. The article was about voting and how important it was for her to make sure her vote counted. But you were to shallow and narrow minded to understand that in your read. No matter how much things change they remain the same in so many ways. God Bless America!

Obama spent 6 trillion first term, if foolishly reelected he will spend at least 6 trillion next term likely 10 trillion or more once unleashed!
I say if Obama is re-elected at the end of Obamas second term we elect a Republican. We then petition him to enact a new law sending every registered democrat the 12 to 16 Trillion dollar bill for all the money wasted by Obama!

For a different side of citizens voting -- after voting this afternoon, I stopped by my local grocery store and, upon leaving, asked the middle-aged, blond cashier if she would have time to vote today. I guess you didn't see the long lines...Why is that some people just like to say stupid things. Mixing things up like, racial comments, marital status, religion, politics, economics, etc. Please focus, she did a great thing that many still thinking on doing it. Please be kind to others, because no matter who wins the election we all are in this together, no control of the situation whatsoever!!! I'm sure we all want the same things: peace, love, health, job, and enough money to provide for ourselves and our families. Agree? So let go of so much anger, lets work together for a better world. Just think if this little girl one day reads about all these, wouldn't you feel ashame she came to this world knowing her mother got so many nasty remarks. Think, what about if she was your baby, your own blood? How would you feel about it? One day you will be a father, a mother, a brother or a sister, and this kind of remarks can affect your life. I hope this young lady, married or not, rich or poor, educated or not (maybe for having no means), forgive us, but know that what she did was right. Congratulations!!! The right that every American have to vote was acquire with lots of blood, already. What a previlege we have to live in a democratic country & have the freedom to vote. So, shame on us for recriminating a human being this way. Have a wonderful day & hope that who ever wins, will be the best for America, a new victory for the American people for being the best example to the world.

yoopergone, you make a good case here. I have said to some people awhile ago that if Romney were elected, we'd be seeing lots of bad things happen. I think I had also heard Romney would be giving the wealthiest of this country some of the Bush-era tax cuts (which I think weren't given then). I can certainly hope we get Obama for another 4 years.

MAT, you make a good point here. I think when it comes to women expecting babies, if they FEEL the need's urgent, they'll do WHAT THEY CAN to drive themselves to the hospital. IF they know anyone who can help them doing this, they will TRY and reach them so that things can be done FASTER.

Reese, I can agree with you here - Galicia had to have made a bold move to get herself to the hospital, but AT THE SAME TIME, stop at her polling place to place a ballot for this year's election. I think only a SMALL minority of people would find some LAME excuse NOT to vote.

Peter, I thank you for what you just said - she might probably had not realized of the amendment to the U. S. Constitution which lowered the age for voting from 21 to 18 (also, during a political science class, I had heard someone wanting the drinking age lowered as such, arguing, "OLD enough to VOTE, OLD enough to DRINK"

No male could possibly fathom what it feels like to be in labor for the first time. And guess what? I couldn't give a rat's a** whether anyone howls about my opinion. What I do know it this young woman was extraordinarily brave to stop and vote for her first time before driving herself to deliver her child. Her race, relationship status or political affiliation don't matter. Let's cut the crap in half right now: Guys, give it a rest. Unless you happen to be the first male birth, your input here really doesn't isn't germane. And judging from reading these comments, it's clear that bigotry is alive and well in the SW 'burps! (Sic & pun intended!) I'll bet these same cowards wouldn't have the guts to make these remarks in person, when we could make them take responsibility for their blatant racism and misogyny.

Dear Galicia, I hope your baby was born during this election race, healthy and happy. Because this election was vibrant, electrical and peaceful in the way it was conducted, a real democratic example to the world. Although, some people prefere hurting others with nasty comments, well, lets not go there again. Now, this is a thing of the past, lets focus in the wonderfull future ahead, not just for all Americans, but specially for this little baby that symbolizes not just changes but a new begining. Wishing you happy days ahead. Regards.

Galicia...you did a wonderful thing and your child will one day understand that voting is very important as it is our duty as as American citizens. It is what allows for democracy and the wonderful freedom this country offers. Be blessed always and may you and your family prosper spiritually as well as materially. Very proud to have voted and very proud to congratulate you and the many who did make time for such. :)

Democrat or Republican or any of the other parties, I have to tip my hat off to her for her initiative and want to vote. Even if she voted against my choices, major kudos for doing this knowing that your vote does matter. It's your vote that determines the electoral college votes. Taken from:
http://reference.yourdictionary.com/word-definitions/define-electoral-college.html
"Does My Individual Vote Still Count?
Some people might believe that since the Electors in the Electoral College ultimately determine who wins and loses the Presidential election, that their individual vote is no longer necessary. However, this is untrue. Electors use the results of the popular vote to make their ultimate decisions. Therefore, the popular vote is the foundation for the process and allows Electors to know the desires of the American people."

You did the right thing girl. God was with you and you baby. I was crying when I saw the poles stated Romney is on top. I started to prayer and cry out to God for favor for Obama then I saw the pole stated to go up for him and I text my friends and tell them Obama win when the pole was still going on. God give me the strength to believe in what I ask for. I thank the Lord for his work well done. Obama is my President for a second term.

OBAMA won and MITT didn't. Enough said. You can say whatever it is you want to say but that's fact. Now, people that are upset that Romney lost, PAY ATTENTION. To me it speaks volumes that the state that Romney is Governor of Voted for Obama. Now while you may not agree with Obama and his plans, why would you want someone in office whose own state didn't want him in office? Maybe they know the Real Romney and not the one he portrayed during this election. And as for those that made comments about this being the weakest security ever, UM I'd say that period of weak security was September 11, 2001 during which Bush was in office, you know that day we all come together and celebrate? That is all.
