Whiz Kid: St. Damian Sixth-Grader Steps Up as Principal for a Day

Each week, we'll feature a cool kid or group of kids from Oak Forest.

It might have been a stroke of luck that landed sixth-grader Cassidy Burns in the role of "Principal for a Day" at St. Damian Friday, April 8.

Cassidy won the prize at thefashion show, but she was pretty much a pro, as she took all the job's perks—like backstage passes to the school's pretty seriously.

"It says that I help out and that I know people," Cassidy said, waving her backstage pass.

During her day beside Principal Domke, Cassidy visited the school's classrooms, chatting with the kids about their days. Domke said Cassidy even piped up with an answer to a parent's question—which math book they were using.

"She's been very excited," Domke said. "She even knew the answer to some of the questions."

With Domke's help, Cassidy took some calls, and left some alone, a motto in place for the day: "It's Friday. If there's any trouble today, we'll deal with it on Monday."

Though the perks were great, Cassidy was most looking forward to "hanging around with Mrs. Domke."

"She's really nice and fun," Cassidy said.

In addition to Domke, Cassidy has a few other favorites at St. Damian. Her favorite class is science, and favorite teacher is Miss Hoffman. She enjoys singing and dancing, and participates in a summer camp in Oak Lawn.

Cassidy announced the morning and afternoon showings of the eighth-grade musical, and was treated to a meeting with Chris Medina afterward.
