UPDATE: Tinley Park Man Fatally Shot in Argument in Store Parking Lot
Thomas P. Mastro, 24, died from a gunshot wound to the chest Thursday after an argument in the parking lot of a Tinley 7-Eleven. Police have a man in custody, but charges have not been filed.
One man is in custody Thursday afternoon, in connection with a fatal shooting at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Tinley Park, according to reports.
The shooting happened between two men who got into an argument around 3:05 p.m., in the parking lot of the convenience store at 16658 S. Oak Park Avenue in Tinley Park, said Village of Tinley Park spokesman Jason Freeman.
Thomas P. Mastro, 24, of Tinley Park, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Tinley Park police still have a suspect in custody, but charges have not been filed, police said. The department is working with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in the continuing investigation, police added.
The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle northbound on Oak Park Avenue and was followed by an off-duty Tinley Park police officer, who was first on the scene, a village press release stated.
After a 45-minute manhunt, he was captured by police at around 147th Street and Central Avenue in Oak Forest. Tinley Park and Oak Forest police also were assisted by officers from Orland Park police and a helicopter from Chicago/Cook County Police Department, the release stated. Cook County Forest Preserve and Palos Park police also were on the scene.
A handgun connected to the shooting was found Thursday north of 159th Street on Oak Park Avenue handgun, Tinley Park police said.
Residents in a mile radius of the shooting were sent a village alert about the incident, but because the shooter had fled so quickly, there was no immediate danger to residents, the release stated. Community Consolidated School District 146 in Tinley Park did not go into lockdown, because it was not notified of the incident by the time of dismissal at 3:35 p.m.
The manhunt had some streets blocked off and slowed down traffic in the area. At one point, Oak Park Avenue between 143rd and 151st Street was blocked off, as well as 143rd Street east of Harlem Avenue.
Tinley Park police confirmed late Thursday that it is being investigated as a homicide. The victim was pronounced dead at Palos Community Hospital.

This is exactly what's happening in Tinley, and it started in Oak Forest. I grew up in OFo and moved out of there 7 years ago because of the demographics of race changing. There's nothing racist about saying that people who take Section 8 housing- white, black, and Latino are degenerate and suck off the system rather than trying to better their lives. The real poor you will find with Catholic Charities or Morning Star Mission. Thank JoAnn Kelly for bringing Section 8 to OFo and watch what Zabrocki does next. The mayor of Frankfort stays secure in his power because he has vowed NEVER to let Section 8 in the area.

Sue1,
You are correct, there would be people complaining about their rights being violated. Do you know why they (and I) would be complaining? They would be complaining because THEIR RIGHTS WOULD BE VIOLATED!!! You can't have police making more stops and searches "in a round about way" so people know Tinley Park means business.
While I'm sure that YOU may feel safer with the police having the authority to stop and search people, if it makes us safer, many of us feel safe already and don't want to give up the rights we are guaranteed under the Constitution.

This isn't 1979 when most people still lived in Chicago and Tinley Park had still had farms! Tinley Park is a BIG town with people from every race from every suburban to neighborhood in Cook county. There are also hundreds of crimes committed by whites in Tinley Park each year. There are thousands of violent crimes perpetrated by whites each year. Is there a cycle of poverty, lack of education, and violence? Yes. Is it related to race? Yes. Is it a biological factor that makes blacks, or other people of color, more likely to commit a crime, do poorly in school, or be subjected to poverty? No. It's a vicious cycle of racism and white privilege. Educate yourselves. This mentality is exactly why I moved out of the suburbs long ago. Guess I'll just stick to living in the city with other well-educated "liberal freaks."

It is imperative that a description of a suspect especially those that are not in custody be given to a community. I happen to care about the suspects race/nationality of crime in my community. We need to know who is committing crime, where are they from, race, education level, etc. How else are we going to solve these problems and educate people and prevent. It's sad how facts and statistics are called racism in today's society.

Joe Vince, I did not say that their was another suspect. You are correct they have not released as of this time a description of the gun man. I am speaking in general to the previous poster. All too often the news outlets do not give descriptions of suspects. I have read articles about journalists at the Tribune being told not to put descriptions in crime reports.I find this insulting to a community. What does race have to do with solving crime? Please tell me you are kidding me, we need to study crime and statistics to prevent it. Will we ever prevent it completely, no of course not. Why is crime rising in Tinley Park, is it a increased population? Is it low income housing, who is moving into those homes? Is the the proximity of the expressways? Is it mental illness? lack of fathers? Sorry Joe if you can't understand but crime needs to be studied extensively.
Michael M.
5:21 pm on Friday, March 22, 2013
Joe Vince--what is wrong with wanting to know? Race plays a huge part in any police investigation, any officer will tell you that. Race defines gang affiliations and gang borders. If you want to know if a gang is looking for new territory, look at the race of criminals. When I was 16, I drove with my friends to the north side and ended up in cabrini-green because I had no clue where I was going. A black officer pulled me over in a matter of minutes, wanting to know what I was doing there. He said I did not belong there, and he was right. He knew I was either lost or I was doing something I should not be doing. He used racial profiling to either stop or solve a crime or save someone from being a victim. I am grateful he pulled me over, he may have saved me from being a victim. Race has a lot to do with crime,

@ Human race, I don't think anyone is saying that ALL black people are bad. But we all have to wake up and admit there is a problem in the black communities and what those problems are. When 70% of crime is committed by African Americans in Chicago alone and over 70% of Blacks come from single parent homes we have to put 2 and 2 together. It's not racism that makes people feel the way they do it's statistics. When pointing out these facts you have others who point fingers and cry racist. Then community leaders blame racism on fathers not supporting children and crime in community. I feel like I am living in crazy town. I know many many hard working black families that move to the burbs for good life and to get away from the crime. I don't believe anyone is talking about those hard working individuals.

TP is not the same since they closed the projects and shipped the thugs out to the burbs. TP neighbors high crime areas and we will be forced to move west, further away from downtown and higher paying jobs, which is BS for those of us who work for a living and don't rob people. TP folks cant afford to move north to more affluent areas. TP needs to change soon. Stop letting stores like Rue 21 and Rainbow move into town. Ever see those stores near Oakbrook?

A few takeaways:
1. We need more facts before jumping to so many conclusions.
2. It is evident that the combined efforts of local police forces did a nice job in apprehending the suspect and should be commended.
3. I went to college and work w/ the self-styled "highly educated". By educated they actually mean indoctrinated. Classical liberalism was rooted in a respect for individual liberty and independent thought. Today's modern liberalism is a perversion of the classical liberal heritage. It is nothing more than collective ideology based on pathetic talking points. The so-called highly-educated poster, here, is simply a product of this. The fact is fly-over country has become increasingly more intellectual than "enlighted" urban culture -- and of course that's not to say fly-over country is all that intellectual... Sorry, but "highly educated" in this country has increasingly become "highly indoctrinated".

I agree with your second point about the police response. I think the police did an excellent job coordinating between departments in order to apprehend the suspect. This kind of thing can happen anywhere. People have made it on to the White House lawn, which has some of the tightest security in the country. I do not think this incident is an indictment of Tinley Park. We love living here.

I am at the point of being afraid to go out of my house. Living for the past 30 years in old downtown, this town is scarey. I am tired of all of Mayor Z's promises! He gets his train stations and convention centers.... how about all of the stores that are empty. Where is the future going - other than to HELL! I'm not necessarily a fan of this mayor. What do you propose he should do to prevent this from happening? Without more facts, I'm afraid you'd be reaching. The fact is, though, inter-deparmental coordination did contribute to quickly bringing the suspect into custody and it is good for the mayor to recognize that in his statement.

I have a family of 14 hood rats who rent the house next to mine and believe me I've tried being the nice neighbor only to get " you best be gettin back to your house and stop disrespecting me". TPD has since been put on speed dial and after multiple arrest and drug busts, they're starting to get the point.. Call, Call, Call! on anything that's questionable. He finaly said, well I'll let the officers know. Did he? I was not racist, HE was. Get that straight. I only wanted the crime to stop, but it didn't. How in the world is conceal and carry going to improve safety? You are out of your mind. That just means more people will have guns and more guns will be fired. If I am in the mind set of pulling a gun on someone I already don't care if they have one. Chances are the one who is being threatened isn't quick draw McGraw and what ever was going to happen will happen. If the state wasn't so broke they woulden't have to have stolen all the police pension money and could train officers to be real police and keep more of them on the streets full time. I am not saying this could have prevented anything, but I for one would feel safer with that than john q public carrying a gun in his waste band. Zabrocki only cares about everything west of Harlem unless it has something to do with the train station or a bordering business that he, most of the time, doesn't have to pay his bill (and they keep feeding his fat butt). In every town when you see an area going bad and government does NOTHING to help it, it's because they get more benefits from federal government for having a "lower end". Zabrocki is all about money. I was referring to the people on this forum that have said that since black people or "animals" or "those people" or "the ghettos"...(which by the way is the new "N" word) have moved in tinley the crime rate is up. I also gave an example of how a "white" child came into my home and stole my childs stuff but I never spewed any hate for his race, but for his actions cause a black kid could have done the same. I also stated that we do not have the facts about the crime so its all speculation as to why he was shot and killed. An argument is no reason for ANYONE to be killed and we dont know if either of them even lived in tinley so it could have and does happen anywhere.

Just read this, this hit's the white privileged liberals, from the city...I wonder if Stephanie lives on the south side...
I’ll tell *you* what’s racist — not policing a 12 block area on the south side of Chicago where children are shot so often, they don’t even run when they hear gunfire.
I’ll tell *you* what’s racist — making sure the loop in downtown Chicago, where by the way, I lived for three years, sees virtually no homicides. Yet on the south side of Chicago, the poor, the downtrodden, black and brown children are murdered in the middle of the day, in parks, on playgrounds, and in places where they have a right to be.
You allow gangs with *illegal* weapons to patrol the streets on the south side of Chicago – putting innocent victims at risk.
You hide behind accusations of racism, while people are dying. You criticize my right to own a legal gun that you want to tax and trace, while your city is trampled in a small 12-block area by people with *illegal* guns. Why don’t you track and trace them?

An 1872 state law allows aldermen and other municipal officials, as peace officers, to carry guns, make arrests and detain suspects "after receiving a certificate attesting to the successful completion of a training course administered by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board." Most politicians today prefer to be surrounded by guns aka security details. Lends an air of importance!

There's nothing in the color of a person's skin that makes them more likely to murder, rape, or sell drugs. It's the "black" culture we've created in America that's the problem, and that comes from the government, media, and entertainment industry.
I wish everyone has had the opportunity to work with black people who grew up up in "black" cultures other than the US as in Africa and the Carribean as I have. Nigerians, for example, have a higher percentage of citizens with advanced degrees than the US. I've worked with many in the financial and Oil engineering industry who are among the best in the world. THEIR "black" cultures still have social stigmas with out of wedlock birth and value educational achievement and hard work. Anyone who knows Non-gang related Jamaicans knows they flourish here, often working several jobs while getting educations in nursing and business.
In Africa, a man fathering children with several women and abandoning them would be a pariah and outcast. Here they are glorified and respected for their "prowess".
Make no mistake about it, the murder and gang culture here was carefully crafted by a liberal culture, and until we re-introduce social stigma and end subsidizing of out of wedlock birth and lack of educational and professional ambition, we're going to feed and expand the culture that kills babies and young children by the hundreds every year in places like Chicago, and people driving a "gold benz" will murder on our streets.

This is such crap. What happened last summer when pot growing houses were shut down in the Southwest burbs, those were not black people with the sophisticated growing equipment in the home. Remember for those who grow it there must be a seller and a buyer of the product for it to work.

Beth, equating growing pot to a crime of violence is ridiculous. The violence around drugs is mainly a consequence of our insane drug laws. It's a mixed up world that equates or even compares growing pot to murdering someone in cold blood.

Once Jon Stewart made the following true, but ironic, comment. He said, "Back in the 1960's, white people fled changing heighborhoods because they were afraid that having their children in contact with blacks would lead to more drug abuse, pre-marital sex, STDs and illegitimate births. Now, after several decades of black rapper and hip-hop culture being brought to every white child through cable TV and music.........DARNED IF THEY WEREN'T RIGHT!"

Nancy, why do you think they knocked down the Chicago CHA projects and expanded section 8 and township rent assistance? They "moved" their problems from the Democratic city to the then Republican suburbs from Chicago Heights to Oak Forest to Palos Hills!
It's probably the only thing that Daley did efficiently and effectively in his entire reign!

I used to live in Manchester Court. The first year, everything was great. Two weeks after I renewed my lease, there was a shooting 50 yards from my balcony. The next day, a neighbor informed me that they'd gone the Section 8 route and that I had a ton of new neighbors. All of a sudden, I started seeing roaches in my apartment (in my bathtub almost daily), the doorknobs to the entrances were broken/removed, and there were always people roaming the hallways. I promptly moved out of there. I hate to say it but when you say Section 8 ruins communities, you couldn't be more correct. That place went downhill FAST.

There is a serious problem with drugs throughout this country. And the biggest source of the problem is the insane drug laws. These laws create black market profits, which in turn creates a black market culture of theft and violence. The best thing we could do against gangster culture and violence is repeal these laws and take away the government created profits in dealing drugs. Like alcohol, what we put in our bodies should be based on personal responsibility not government mandate.

Seriously, some of you people are so ignorant! I grew up in Oak Forest and had many friends from Tinley. There have been trouble making, drug addicted, drug selling white thugs in Tinley and the surrounding towns for years!!! There are also a lot of great people! You people are ignorant for going on about race! Tinley has become a melting pot over the years. Therefore, when crime does happen it is at a higher percentage than it was is the 90's that the people involved may not be white! There was just as much crime in the 90's in Tinley, only back then 95% of it was caused by white people! We didn't hear about a lot of it because we didn't have the technology we have now! People are crazy, white, black, brown...it doesn't matter what color people are! I came on here just to find out what happened and am disgusted to see so many of you try to make this about yourselves! Get a life people!!

Crimes committed with a gun, whether there is a loss of life or not, should get 10x the sentence. It is outrageous that law-abiding gun owners have to be punished for the actions of people like this. Make it so that if you are looking to commit a robbery or other such crime you pray that there isn't a gun in a 3 block radius of you just in case it might get tied to you because the punishment would be so steep.

This is why Racism is ALWAYS an issue. Someone asks a question so lets talk about black, white, mexican, etc..... and blow it all out of proportion. We all know statistics, we all know which area's are worse than others, there is ghetto area's and we should all know bad things can happen anywhere. Yes these 2 suburbs (Orland & Tinley) have had their fair share of bad things happen lately but it doesnt make the area horrible to live in. This shooting turned into a conversation of many topics that doesnt relate to what happened. The "You People" comment, lets not be dramatic. It was meant as all of us people not a race. The comment of moving from the suburbs to the City, good luck with that. I never heard that one. Usually its someone moving out of the City to the suburbs. I grew up in the City and chose to raise my kids in the suburbs, not sure where you live that is so much better. Bumblebee, Voice of Reason, Go White Sox, Bob.....nicely said for the most part. Stephanie you do make 1 small point but its not only black people and its not a race issue so its not important but other than that you seem to be a racist. FYI I'm far from racist, I have opinions about all nationalities. And I'm white with Mexican kids in case it matters to whoever talked about races of people. 1 more thing Cocaine seems to be a minor drug lately compared to what you read. Seems heroine is a big choice of many.

This is what I've learned from Liberals, when a group of skinheads, or Democratic KKK members are found out, it is portrayed that all white conservative church-going, bible clinging gun holders are racist, when NBP members and Nation of Islam, and Terrorist are shown, it's always a small minority of that population, when whites leave an area, it's called white flight, when blacks leave an area, it's called trying to better themselves... for this I blame the liberal media and the liberals that keep the black family on the plantation.....I will challenge anyone to show me a liberal that has helped a minority without helping themselves first..... Good argument people..., until it turned into racism! Who cares if the shooter or victim was black, white, or indifferent. This happened in our community! Who the heck says its time to move West ! My parents did that and look crime just follows. Enough with the racism and running. It starts with us as residents! Call the police when something looks out of the ordinary. When the people respond by doing that, criminals will stay away! Criminals rely on our timidness to calling 911. There in lies the problem,we have become a society where the individual looks out for themselves and their family. We need to start looking out for the greater good of everyone. I am not suggesting we get together and sing "Kumbaya" but at least look out for your fellow community members! You don't have to like someone to be nice or show respect to them. Shame on those who practice racism, and even more shame on those who accuse and point out racism in others. We need to stop blaming each other and start standing with one another!

OMG!!!! whata lot of reading....
my family moved from Garfield Ridge,
a Midway Airport neighborhood to Orland Park in 1972. Our Old neighborhood was
CHANGING. What THAT means is
the people who lived in the LeClaire
Court Projects were moving South of 47th Street. My parents not wanting to lose money due to DeValuation..put their house up for sale. We move to OP. They cannot sell the old house due to recession and word is out 'the neighborhood is changing'
That does not mean the yuppies were moving in. They lost over $250K on the sale of our old house. They made up for it in Orland. But is it happening all over again?
We shall see. Chicago & all its neighborhoods have always been very profiled and segregated...way of life here.
If you want to live where that kind of problem is not in your own back yard?
Move to St. Louis. I hear its very different there.

No disrespect to the victim, but when you google the victim's name a mugshot pops up for an arrest on what looks to be drug related last year in cook county. If this is the same person (the name and age match) Is this possibly another drug deal gone bad?

It was all over a parking spot! I can sit and laugh sometimes when I read post and people just talking out of their a__es. First off a 24 yr. old man lost his life to some loser all over a parking spot. A family is now changed forever (who cares about the shooter) but the young man that lost his life yesterday doing nothing but simply stopping for a pop is now forever changed all because of this useless person that was a waste of space in this world anyway. I really don’t know what’s been happening in the Tinley Park area. I moved here 9 yrs. ago from Alsip to raise my 2 children and wanted a great schools dist. along with a great neighbor hood. As of today and I sit and write a post to the public about how disturbed I am by this accident. Where are all these parents? Why are these people so out of control (carrying guns)? It all starts from the roof you live under and I have to say the killers parents should be ashamed of themselves that they raised such a rotten person no matter how old this person is. This is a very sad story!

This is the first I heard of it being over a parking spot. I've heard about five different things now, and I will probably wait until the official reports come out tomorrow.

Why, don"t you look at the police blotter on here. iT. alot of people committing crime.
Cant judge a book by its cover. We have alot of diffrent color of people, In my
area. We dont not have the drama of hatred beacuse they are diffrent race.

As a proud white American, I'm trying to figure out what privileges I have. My husband and I both work 40 hours or more a week. My car is 7 years old. My house needs work done. I've never gotten anything free from the government. If we dont pay for what we want, we can't get it. The privileged are those who get free food, housing, medical, school supplies, car seats house repairs the list goes on and on. Whites privileged? I think, I know, we're not.

The problem is people are raising their kids with zero impulse control. They are too busy to parent so they don't care what their kid is doing. Johnny got an F so let's blame the school. Why isn't Johnny held accountable? Parents letting 5 yr olds play violent video games like Assasin's Creed and Call of Duty because it keeps the little tyke away from you. Lack of parental involvement and lack of accountability.

I think this just proves the need for police checkpoints at the major intersections that lead into our town. I've been noticing an unwanted element getting progressively more prominent in Tinley Park. It's really easy to pick out the people that don't belong. They should be stopped as often as possible. Eventually these unwanted people will realize they aren't welcome and stay in their own towns or go to other towns to rape and pillage. If we citizens and police don't take a stand now our town will look like Oak Forest in no time. When I was a kid Tinley was the place to be and the unwanted element had only made it Kedzie. I want my kids to grow up in the Tinley I knew growing up. I think sheriff Joe Appaio has the right idea. SAVE TINLEY!

It's sad to see Tinley Park falling into decline as the south side of Chicago encroaches further and deeper into the sw suburbs. 159th street looks like hell with empty car dealerships, vacant corners and low-rent retail stores like K-mart and Aldi that attract outsiders introducing all manner of crime. The mini marts have gotten out of control, and have been targets of crime over and over again in just the past year. Low end cell phone stores and dirty fast food restaurants contribute to the ugliness that has set in. TP was a wonderful town once upon a time, but entrenched politicians always let things begin to slip once their own power and cushy retirements have been secured. They appear willing to escape anything that generates revenue, often at the expense of the village's once cozy feel...and safety. It's probably best to infuse the village hall with some new blood come April.

I've traveled to many stares, mostly out west and down south. I've found people in general more polite and they mind their own business and respect others property. There is less violence also. Could it be that everyone can have a gun, as opposed to here, where only the criminals carry guns around? I think so.
