Sweet Treats in the Southland: Where's Your Favorite Ice Cream Spot?

Don't miss the opportunity to nominate what you feel is the BEST ice cream parlor in your community or a surrounding town. It'll face off against others from the area for the title of the most-loved ice cream spot in the Southland. Yum!

Thanks for participating in Patch's Readers' Choice! Our nomination period is now over. Check back July 23, when live voting for your favorites begins!

-------------------

Whether in the form of a cone, cup, sundae or float, everyone loves ice cream.

The icy cold treat is especially popular during the summer months, providing a temporary relief from what can sometimes be scorching temperatures. It's a reward for good behavior, a treat following a relaxing meal or an annual stop along the local parade route.

So we want to know—What's your preferred spot in the Southland is to indulge? There's no doubt that we have a repertoire of deliciously sweet options in Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, Palos, Chicago HeightsHomewood-Flossmoor, Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn, Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena

Does your favorite ice cream parlor specialize in variety? Let you make your own flavors? Have the best frozen custard? It's all yummy so we want to know what makes it THE BEST.

Nominate your favorite ice cream hotspot by telling us in the comments. Here are a few suggestions; however, they STILL NEED TO BE NOMINATED to be included in the poll! As parlors, restaurants or shops are nominated, they'll be added to the list and bolded.

We will accept nominations through July 9.

Where is your favorite place to get ice cream in the Southland? Tell us in the comments.

Though... I do have to say the Plush Horse in Palos is de-lic-ious!!! I used to drive past it when I was pregnant and it would be torture since I was on my way to work and couldn't stop. lol

I nominate Ranch Frostie in New Lenox! They have the best ice cream treats, especially the No Names and our Frostie drumstick. On top of that, the customers are OUTSTANDING! I have been going there since I was a kid and I've worked there for 14 years. Nothing keeps me coming back like the great people I work with, a great boss and the great customers we have every day!

Ummm Culver's is by far the best Ice Cream. Frozen Custard is technically Premium Ice Cream. Hands down winner. If you don't believe me go try a Turtle Sundae or their Flavor of the day.

Why would anyone recommend a chain like Culver's or Andy's when there are so many great, locally-owned places in the southland like Plush Horse, Cupids, Rainbow Cone?

uhhh....maybe because they like it better than what they have gotten in one of the local places? Personally, I have not had good experiences at Plush Horse. The 2 times I have gone there, both times they messed up my order and I will never go there again. Cupid on the other hand I like alot, but I would not look down on anyone who prefers a Culvers over a local place.

Sorry you had a bad experience at Plush Horse Freddie...I've lived here 26 years and never had anyone there mess up an order and we go with a lot of family quite often...maybe you should give it another chance...you can't beat the homemade ice cream :)

I've already put in my two cents about liking Two Sister's cinnamon bun sundae, but that's not going to stop me from putting in two more. As my late mother used to say - and she worked at Prince Castle Ice Cream for many years - frozen custard and ice cream are not the same thing. Real ice cream is what you get from Plush Horse, Baskin-Robbins, Rainbow Cone, etc. Frozen custard is does not even qualify as real ice cream. So if we want to get technical here, there should actually be two separate contests - one for favorite ice cream and one for favorite frozen custard. Personally, I prefer my sundaes to be made with frozen custard, but like my cones with the real deal. Not that anybody cares. Just my two cents. What ever you like - ENJOY! - and the heck with the calories.

Withhout a doubt, it is the Plush Horse in Palos, the icecream is still home made. It is one of my favorite childhood memories of my dad taking me there for icecream. Now I take my grandson and the icecream is still the best !

I find it hard to believe that not one person has mentioned Oberweis. I believe that they have the best ice cream and then second would be Cupid in Orland. Plush Horse I believe is very over rated.
