Sarah Kustok is leaving her post at Comcast SportsNet to cover the Brooklyn Nets basketball team for the YES network.
Kustok will be working during Nets games, as well as pre- and post-game shows, their Nets magazine and YESnetwork.com, according to a release from YES.
The move wraps up three years with Comcast, where she was a strong presence during games and in the anchor seat, after starting out as a feature reporter and occasional anchor for the SportsNet show, according to the release.
During her tenure at Comcast, she interviewed Mark Buehrle after he threw the Sox’s first perfect game since 1922, and applied the same level of professionalism toward Neuqua Valley head coach Todd Sutton after his Wildcats team beat East Aurora in 2010.
Kustok also worked on several different outreach efforts, meeting in person with high school students interested in journalism, helping people get into shape for a contest and even jumping into Lake Michigan in February for the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
She also took on former Bulls player Kendall Gill in a boxing match.
While she approached each Chicago sport with seriousness, Kustok also brought a sense of humor to the fields.
Kustok smiled after getting a face full of shaving cream from AJ Pierzynski, though she vowed to “get him back,” and also continued similarly after an eager Hawks fan professed his love for her.
“Words can't fully express my love, respect & gratitude for the city of Chicago, our teams, fans & @CSNChicago. Always in my heart. THANK YOU,” she posted Monday on Twitter.
Before Comcast, Kustok worked for the Chicago NBC affiliate WMAQ, ESPN and Fox Chicago.
“Sarah has proven herself to be extremely versatile throughout her career and has excelled at a wide variety of assignments,” said John J. Filippelli, president of production and programming at YES, in the release. “Sarah has talent, personality, a love of sports and a quick wit.”
Prior to sports journalism, Kustok was a star DePaul University basketball player, serving as captain her senior year, and going to both the NCAA tournament and the NIT twice. She maintains a 4th place record for three-point field goal percentage, and 10th in career three-point shots made.
Kustok later served as an assistant coach during the team’s 2005-2006 season, where they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in the program’s existence.
Kustok also was a standout basketball star as a Carl Sandburg High School student.
She is scheduled to be inducted Sept. 19 to the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.
