Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Patch Pizza Playoffs: Who Do You Love?

The most-loved pizza championship round is upon us. Vote for your favorite, tell us why you love them and trust in the tongues of eight community taste testers!

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Great 8, the winners of first-round voting in the Patch Pizza Playoffs: Dozeli Pizzeria, Chicago Heights; Durbin's, Evergreen Park; Mama & Me Pizzeria, Homewood; Pizza Pete, Orland Park; Al's Pizzeria, Palos Heights; Chicago Dough Company, New Lenox; Palermo's, Frankfort; Salina's Pizza & Catering, Tinley Park.

Our championship showdown will determine the most-loved pizza in south suburban Patchland. There are two ways you can show your love.

1. VOTE: From today through Sunday at 10 p.m. cast a vote in our poll. Your votes count for one-third of the points in our weighted scoring system.

2. EXPRESS YOURSELF: Leave a stellar review of your favorite place on the eatery's Patch Places business profile. What do you love about the sauce, the dough, the cheese, the sausage ... the cute pizza delivery boy? The more good reviews, the more points. Reviews posted from today through Sunday at 10 p.m. will count toward one-third of the final score.

The final third of the vote will involve eight lucky Patch readers.

3. TASTE TEST: We've invited one Patch community member from each of the eight first-round brackets to a pizza tasting, which will take place on Thursday, Feb. 16. They will rate the pies on a scale of 0-5 (with 5 being the best). Each pizza place will be able to choose the type of toppings and pie for the tasting, putting their best pie forward. Their votes will determine one-third of the final score.

Cast your vote. Then click on the restaurant's name below to get to their profile, where you can submit a review.

* You're free to vote several times to support your favorite place. But if the number of votes gets out of hand, the Great Brain at Patch will adjust the results in proportion to the number of visitors to our poll.

I completely agree that pizza is a very important topic. However, I dont think this qualifies as "breaking news". When I see breaking news - I'm expecting a police situation or fire or some type of emergency in town. I would recommend that you use the phrase "breaking news" only when it is necessary.

That said, I go with Chicago Dough!

You're absolutely right Karin. That was meant to go out as an alert at lunchtime with a note as an invitation to newsletter recipients to vote ... but we glitched that up and the alert went out without my note. My apologies.

Not Quite as bad as:
The 1959 'Go-Go' White Sox and the air-raid sirens...

Fire Commissioner Robert J. Quinn ordered a celebratory five-minute sounding of the city's air-raid sirens. The late-night wail, at a time when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev's threat to bury America was still fresh, frightened tens of thousands of area residents. Many rushed to the streets. Others herded hysterical children to shelter. "We had seven children under 9 and woke them all up when the sirens screamed," said Mrs. Earl Gough of the South Side. "We said Hail Marys together in the basement."

Quinn apologized but also argued that the incident provided "a very good test" of the area's readiness, which he found wanting. Mayor Richard J. Daley claimed Quinn acted in accordance with a City Council proclamation that "there shall be whistles and sirens blowing and there shall be great happiness when the White Sox win the pennant."

Yea....!

I won't vote for any of these, especially Salina's who cheated with an online vote repeating program in the Tinley Park contest. Unfortunately, they were still declred the winner(?).

Mary Carumba, jeffery:

I just got back from writing a story about a local man who is leaving on Monday for a tour of duty in Kuwait, leaving behind a pregnant wife and an 8-year-old daughter who is still having trouble dealing with the fact her father won't be around for nine months.

Pizza is flattened dough, usually circular, covered with a tomato-based sauce and cheese.

A little perspective, both of you. If you think some of the other places should have won this completely optional non-binding click poll that we created to bring attention to all the local pizza options, buy pizza from there. We salute your dedication to these local businesses, but please keep it civil.

Jeffery,
You are a disturbed little boy.

Paul Dailing,
Why don't you be a real man and join the military like the local man you are writing about instead of spending the day surfing on your computer posting stupid comments and deleting legimate ones?

I'm sure you would make more money than the minimum wage your getting now.

WOW Mary Carumba! This is only a pizza poll, not a presidential election! My favorite didn't make it, but I'm not about to post low blowing comments over folks who didn't agree with my choice. And coming from a huge and long line of military family memebers, I can tell you, that although we support your offer to "encourage" others to join the military, who honor and serve this country proudly, to do it in the manner that you have, is in extremely poor taste and very offensive.

On a side note, no one is forcing you to vote, so fine..don't. Plus, no one is telling you that you have to go to the other pizza places and no longer can go to your favorite. Fox's, my choice, didn't win. And I'm pretty sure this poll isn't going to change any of their loyal customers' minds either. But I am willing to try some of these other places, just in case.

Try a more postive approach instead....you go to your favorite pizza place tonight and let them know how much you appreciate their pizza. I'm 100% positive they would love to know it. And like Paul Dauling mentioned, you can still post your raves about your place here. And who knows, by just mentioning their name and why you like them, might bring more business to them too. Just a thought. :-)

Seriously, breaking news is something that is important or might affect people. This is a local online newspaper/not Fox News or CNN, so please do us a favor and not try to be that. I am inclined to opt out if this continues, stick to the news if you would like to be credible.

There are 6 local Durbin's locations in the south suburbs. The Aurelio's and Beggar's chains are much more widespread. An exec at Aurelio's suggested that we should omit the large franchise chains from any local pizza showdown, particularly Aurelio's, because its large fan base would dwarf the moms and pops. The Evergreen Park Durbin's made it through the first round.

Tim and Gina are kind humble people and they truly care about their customers as much as they do about the quality of each ingredient they use!! That being said I LOVE CHICAGO DOUGH. When you get home with that carry out pizza , that has had your mouth watering the whole ride home. You just have to close your eyes & take it all in, the aroma of excellence. Hand-made with pride staring at you. Your stomach says don't wait any longer just dig right in but you can't do that to a Al's pizza. You have to sit back & absorb every bit of detail of this crafted beauty you just puchased. From the crust to the center pieces, incredible bite after bite. You really have to sit back & sayabsorb Al's definitely puts pride in their work. I can admit I do try other establishments but no other compares to Al's. Others just make a pizza - Al's brings you Italy on a plate.

I went with the winner and tried Chicago Dough last night. First time there and never again. Ordered a supreme. The toppings were tasteless. Who keeps playing with the votes? Ludicrous. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the individuals who complained about the voting in the first place, just to make a point. Real mature. But, anything is likely, I suppose. Lala, that's the first time I've ever heard someone say that several fresh toppings on a pizza were bland and that the crust there is like a cracker. I've personally never experienced that. In fact, I find the thin crust to be slightly thicker and chewier than most. You ordered a supreme? That's what it's called there? What was on it? Just curious. As a former restaurant manager, let me just say to everyone that managers/owners/operators of any establishment love to hear feedback from their guests, whether it's constructive criticism, complete dislike, or praise. I'm sure that other managers/owners on here, like Wendy from Al's for example, would agree with that. I really feel that you should have talked to the manager on duty...#1 to express your disappointment and #2 to praise the server, especially if he/she exceeded your expectations. Remember, problems cannot be remedied until they're brought to a supervisor's attention so that they may investigate and make the appropriate adjustments...and that applies to EVERY industry, not just food service.

I ordered a Spectacular which to me is a supreme. Sausage, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, black olives and green peppers. It was a thick crust. I also ordered the sweet sauce. I do stand by previous comment that the toppings were bland and the crust was not the best. Perhaps I will try it again (maybe thin crust) and take your advice and speak to a manger if it is not good. Thank goodness I had a $8 off coupon.

Lala, I thought you were talking about the thin crust to begin with. Personally, I'm neither a fan of the deep dish nor the "deep" (sweet) sauce (which come together, standard). I'd just rather fill up on the toppings rather than the carbs. They're known for the thin crust and the "thin" sauce that comes with it. Double Crust is good too if you prefer more dough without going "deep dish." But with all the toppings, I'd definitely suggest thin crust.

The Big Taste Test

I would like to hear more about how the test will be conducted. If it's just simply eight judges that will taste eight different pizza's, I would think that everything would taste the same after three or four slices.
I hope someone could come up with a more accurate measure. Maybe a first and second round, where two separate groups of four judges each taste four pizza's. Then the winners of both groups go head to head in a final competition using all eight judges sampling just two pizza's.

Just a suggestion....

Don

I think they're probably going to go to each individual place and rate them on a scale of 1-5. The top scored ones will then be brought in for the final taste test. That's just a guess.

Oh my....really think people are taking this a bit TOO seriously.

Its not like the overall winner is winning a huge $ prize. I wouldn't blame the Patch editors if they decided to make this the last poll ever. I hope not. I appreciate the Patch chowdowns/reviews when I'm looking for something new, or haven't found a real favorite yet. So thank you Patch Editors! I appreciate all you're doing to bring attention to the local businesses, pizza and otherwise!

How did Delanoes Pizza not make the list? Best pizza by far. If you haven't tried them you should. Great pizza and great people working there. The sauce is really good too.

I agree about Delanoes. A friend told me about them and it is the only place we get our pizza from now. Really good and good coupons too. Have tried a couple sandwiches which are also good. Food has always been fresh and hot. Was tired of the bad service we have gotten over and over from several other places. These people are nice.

Salina's by far is the best around. I have ordered pizza from surrounding areas (evergreen-oak lawn, morris-mazon, berwyn-cicero, bollingbrook-plainfield ect...) I will always be a loyal customer! Unfortunately their food and service is so good after being unemployed for a year Salinas is my family's only continued vice my kids love it. I have also used their catering and rental services and have been equally impressed. Planning a birthday party for Irish triplets is hard enough but to know that i am able to make one phone call to a LOCAL small business and have all of my needs taken care of is most genuinely appreciated.

Durbins has good pizza, but being a resident of Oak Lawn there's no way it compares to Phils, Foxs, Palermos, and probably 2 or 3 more?? Don't know how Durbins got on top for our general area but it sure wasn't voted tops by pizza eaters???

Great Pizza starts with fresh and quality ingredients. Pizza Pete not only uses quality products but strives to purchase their fine products locally whenever possible. They have a unique oven that produces that tasty thin and crispy crust. They have expanded their menu over the years, some of my favorite additions are the mixed veggie basket and all their chicken items. I look forward to ordering from "The Pete" everytime I get back to Orland Park. Pizza Pete has been owned and operated by the same family for over 40 years now and gets my vote for the best pizza pie in the south suburbs.

Pizza Pete is the best on the area. I moved out of Orland many years ago and I always make it a point to go back for a double decker pizza with sausage at least every weekend. My parents and my family have been loyal customers for over 30 years and I hope they win because they deserve it!

Hey, John J.

If I am correct in assuming your comment is in reference to the title article that linked to this—it might be worth clarifying that Mama & Me was announced as having the local pizza playoff victory as opposed to the regional pizza playoff victory.

Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks, Wendy. I hope that is what people take away from this playoff. We are celebrating our local businesses and the undeniable love affair southsiders have with their favorite pizza. Here at Patch we not only cover our towns, but celebrate what makes them special. For me, that is in large part the small business owners who form the backbone of a town. I hope this encourages everyone to support those places that support your community.
