Letter to the Editor: Legal System Not Treating Ashford House Defendants Fairly
Jacob Domke, a member of the Hoosier Anti-Racist Movement, says the five Indiana men on trial for this past summer's Ashford House attack are facing harsher treatment than those accused of similar crimes.
The following letter by Jacob Domke, a member of the Hoosier Anti-Racist Movement, was sent in response to the Sept. 27 Patch article, Tinley Park 5 Becomes Symbol for Anti-Rascist Groups Across the Country. The five Indiana men being tried in the Ashford House attack are said to be connected with this organization. Go to the group's website for more information.
I think the question the editor brings up about the community impact of an action such as the TP5 are accused of is valid. Antifascists have, at times, been remiss in not taking repercussions to the communities seriously enough. That said, I feel that the negative repercussions to the Tinley Park community are far outweighed by the damage inflicted upon the white supremacists' ability to organize. The business owner is the only person not affiliated with white supremacy who had any real negative repercussions thrown their way. Let's keep in mind that he blames BOTH groups even though the alleged action at the restaurant cost him several thousand dollars. Since he's the most effected community member in this case, I have a hard time offering up sympathy to anyone who was less effected yet demands more vengeance. If I assume that media portrayal of the incident is at all accurate, I can imagine it would have been very scary and confusing for someone to see first hand. I'm sorry that those who weren't there for the meeting between the National Socialist Movement, Council of Conservative Citizens, and KKK [Editor's note: The individuals meeting at Ashford House claim they were there for the first meeting of the European Heritage Group, which is not a racist organization] were put in a position where they had to bear witness to violence. My assumption is that most residents of Tinley Park have never seen violence except as portrayed on a television.
I could go into a long discussion about how our tax dollars fund violence towards people of color, whether that be through the funding of foreign wars or police violence. I could add that the majority of clothing we wear was manufactured by the violence of Asian sweatshops. We live in a violent world and I believe we are all complicit in that violence. However, I don't presume to think that I'll change anyone's mind on the violence versus nonviolence debate in a letter to the editor. The main point that I would like to raise is in response to those who hold beliefs that "they broke the law" and regardless of their motivations deserve to punished.
Had the TP5 ran into that restaurant and done everything that they're accused of doing with the intent to rob someone, they would have been released by now. They would have been offered a quick and easy plea deal since no one was seriously injured. However, this is not the situation at hand. Let's keep this in perspective. This summer in Chicago there were evenings in which as many as 25 people were shot. That day in Tinley Park three die-hard, hate-crime committing, honest-to-God Nazis had to have a couple stitches put in their dense little heads and were sent home the same day. The TP5's bail was set $175K-$250K each (higher than Trayvon Martin's killer George Zimmerman). The Department of Corrections has stolen their commissary, loses the majority of their correspondence, and repeatedly switches their locations within the jail to prevent them from organizing and sharing reading materials with fellow inmates. The prosecution refuses to offer a reasonable plea. The TP5 families have been targeted. A relative of one of the TP5 had her dog murdered by friends of the "innocent diners" in the aftermath of the media attention it has gotten. This is not a typical criminal case and is inherently political both because of the alleged motivations of the defendants and the response by the State.
My main point is that if the "law and order" argument were a genuine one, then this case should be treated no differently than anyone else who was accused of beating up a few violent criminals. This is absolutely not what's happening. From a "law and order" perspective they should be fined for the damages caused to the innocent third party and released on time served, just as anyone accused of similar crimes (with different motivations) would be in Chicago.
Sincerely,
Jacob Domke, Hoosier Anti-Racist Movement

"... I have a hard time offering up sympathy to anyone who was less effected yet demands more vengeance."
Jacob, it is not vengeance we seek, but justice. This violent crime happened in a public place in our community. Therefore, it happened to ALL of us. Just as the occasions of racial intolerance you purport to oppose happen to ALL of us, whether we are present or not, whether we are minorities or not. Intolerance is the enemy, regardless of the target. Once you use unlawful violence with the intent to cause injury to disrupt a peaceful and legal gathering, you become the enemy. You become Eric Rudolph. You become Ted Kaczynski. Society has a right to demand justice.

They deserve what they got and will be getting. I applaud the police department and justice system for putting an end to all violence. You can not use violence as a means to make something right. Plus they could have gotten a plea deal a long time ago if they hadn't chose to try to claim innocence. And if they could have posted bail like anyone else who commits violence crimes, they could be out on bail.
Sorry - no special priviliages allowed for people who not only use violence against people they don't agree with, but also when they weren't being disruptive either. I do not agree with anyone being racist. And that include people who attack another group because they believe them to be racists.

The bail is unbelieveable! Did you get that part? I's called way out of hand! It does't fit the crime.

This is in response to Mr. Domke's devaluation of the victims as White Suremacists; one of whom is actually a voting registrar for the coming election, and an especially gentle person who never even asks who they're planning to vote for.
The Pioneer Little Europe Prospectus by H. Michael Barrett, which is on-line for anyone to see, does not advocate supremacy anywhere in its entire 86 pages. It does say, however, that even someone like yourself should be permitted free speech. It's a constitutional guarantee, anyone can legally hold non-conformist beliefs without being physically assaulted; just as Blacks, gays, Asians or anyone else might practice some form of "supremacy" in a community.
As for the owner blaming both the attackers and the victims for his losses: Well his expertise is serving food, not serving justice. But then the supporters of vigilantee actions don't make such distinctions, do they?

Why hold their meeting in a public place in the 1s place? These are very violent people, as we have seen for decades. I understand they have that right as we all do but violence follows violence. Maybe the owner should checkwho books his place of business for these types of meetings. Tha way he is protecting his business & neighborhood.

Hello Jacob Domke of the Hoosier Anti-Racist Movement! Thank goodness someone like yourself has so generously taken the time to come forward and protest this terrible injustice by the racist system. We didn't have to put up with this kind of stuff when comrade Stalin was alive. Yes, what I project is that the men arrested were just innocent car-poolers. One was headed to play baseball, therefore the bat; one was headed for his martial arts class, therefore the nunchucks; one was headed to a costume party, therefore the mask; and one was a psychic who projected that they were going to experience a flat at anytime, therefore the tire iron. Yeah, that's it. And their attorneys will explain anything I left out. But gosh, Jacob, you do seem familiar. Aah, do we know you from perhaps the Ashford House? Reservation for 18?

Such strange times in which we live where those opposed to, "fascism" and "intolerance" carry concealed weapons, wear masks to conceal their identity like bank-robbers, mob-assault and batter the elderly, and flee police in high speed chases. These anti-fascist freaks are nothing more than common street thugs carrying out a hit. Giving these gang-members anything less than the maximum penalty will be a travesty.

I agree. We'll see how they deal with prison, where racial realities are unavoidable and the norm.

Growing up, superheros wore masks. I think the shoe fits. It's a sad society we live in where we HAVE to wear masks to fight for what is right. Don't hate because you have grown complacent with the systematic racism and oppression, or is it because you are benefiting from it?

They'll find out that PRISON is not anti-racist, and no white people will come to their defense from prison realities.
