Cook County Residents Among Unhealthiest in State

Nearly a quarter of Cook County adults lack physical activity and over a quarter are obese.

A recent study lists Cook County residents as some of the least healthy in the state. We rank 78th healthy out of 102 counties, according to The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The report also provides a snapshot of health statistics for Cook County. Here are a few:

  • 26 percent of Cook County adults are obese
  • 24 percent of Cook County adults lack physical activity
  • 19 percent of Cook County adults smoke
  • 21 percent of Cook County adults drink excessively
  • 20 percent of Cook County residents are uninsured
  • 10 percent of Cook County children live in poverty

The survey was based on several factors, including length of life, quality of life, clinical care, health behaviors, socioeconomic factors and physical environment.

It would be nice to include that Cook County is also the largest county in the state and also contains the city of Chicago which could make a differece in interpreting these numbers.

Actually you are wrong. With a population of over 9 million LA county is the largest county in terms of population. The city of Chicago is a shrinking city and has been for decades. It is the 3rd largest. Both NYC (the city Chicago tries to be) and Los Angeles are in better health.

And on top of all of that we're being taxed to DEATH. So why worry about all of that, they'll tax you for being obese, or smoking or drinking, etc. Maybe they should reduce their salaries and become examples. It sure doesnt look like Periwinkle is starving.

Anecdotal observation: lower I.Q./less education = higher incidence of obesity/more likely to vote Democrat.

Ernie - Every overweight/obese person I know is college educated. I do not hold a college degree but I am incredibly healthy. Education has nothing to do with food intake. It's all about personal choices.

Perhaps the parents of these unhealthy kids should feeds the kids themsleves instead of feeding off the taxpayers, the link card, churches and food pantries. These services should be for people that fell on hard times. I know people that abuse these services every month. Sickening. Pattyann.

It doesn't really matter whether any of us thinks this is right or wrong - the problem remains: We're one of the most obese counties in the whole country. And about 65% of the entire nations population is overweight or chronically obese.
I had an AM talk radio show, "The Laura Dion-Jones Show: Lose Weight Fast, Get Rich Quick, Look Young Forever," in Elgin that I recently put on hiatus. Through my radio show, I held a "Commit To Get Fit With Laura Dion-Jones/Elgin's Biggest Loser competition and I helped motivate 182 Elgin and Fox Valley area residents to lose 1800 pounds in about 18 months. Here's hoping I can do the same thing for Cook County and the City of Chicago!!! Are you listening Mayor Rahm and Ms. Preckwinkle? I am at your service in whatever way I can be.
