Ridgeland Avenue in for $480K of Improvements
The Oak Forest city council and IDOT have an agreement in place to begin work on Ridgeland Avenue, between 151st Street and Victoria Drive. The work will cost the city $103,500, with the remainder of the costs covered by a grant.
Ridgeland Avenue, between 151st Street and Victoria Drive, will be a smoother ride for motorists in the coming months, after aldermen reached an agreement with IDOT for construction and construction engineering.
The agreement will cost the city $103,500, with the remaining costs of $378,000 coming from a previously secured grant.
“This agreement is with the Illinois Department of Transportation, that just states that we've budgeted the $103,500,” said Public Works Director Troy Ishler.
The city's contribution to the project is already included in the city's Motor Fuel Tax program for the 2013 budget year, Ishler said.
Covered in the work is repaving, curb and sidewalk repairs and the planting of 77 trees along the roadway, Ishler said. Work is expected to begin in mid-May and should last about six weeks, according to Ishler.
The agreement was approved by city aldermen in an unanimous 5-0 vote.

unfortunatly, most fast growing trees are usually pretty crappy. oaks, especially pin oaks are slow growers but really nicely shaped, and attractive. this is Oak Forest, not Maple forest.

Slow growing trees(maples) penetrate yours and the city sewers much worse than slow growers, that is why the city leans toward slow growing hardwoods.

While I understand Ridgeland is a "major" artery (even though it only goes from 151st to 159th) and therefore eligible for state grant money, streets like Rio Verde and Las Robles are in far worse shape. Pot holes in the patches that patched the pot holes in the previous patches that patched the crumbling puzzle like payvment are in dire need of patching again!

I live on Long Ave between 149th and 147th. My street is crumbling, with several potholes and a sewer collapsing in front of my house. In the 25 years we've lived here, the street has never been resurfaced. I've called Public Works several times about the sewer, and when they finally came out all they did was dump gravel in the hole, which didn't hold. I also emailed our alderman last summer, but nothing happened. 149th between Mission and Laramie is terrible, too. I don't understand how a city lets the street near a school get that bad. You'd think they'd want those streets in particular to be nice, so if families who are thinking about moving to Oak Forest check out the schools, they'd be impressed. I'm thrilled that they did finally put a sidewalk down Central on one side, so people can actually walk to Jewel, City Hall, the Library, etc. without walking in the street.
