Oak Forest police were led on a brief car chase down 159th Street and through a local pub's parking lot, before a car burglary suspect flipped his car over a guardrail, down a 30-foot embankment and escaped on foot Jan. 14.
While on patrol in the 6100 block of 159th Street Monday night, police noted a suspicious subject standing next to a vehicle in the Oliver's Bar and Grill parking lot, the scene of several car burglaries in recent months. Officers pulled into the lot and noted a car exit and drive down 159th Street at a high rate of speed.
Officers followed the car down 159th Street before its driver made an abrupt u-turn, reversing direction down 159th Street before pulling into Cindy's Pub. Officers noted a male black, approximately 35-40 years old, behind the wheel of the car.
The driver headed to the back of the lot, before stopping at a guardrail, accelerating, and flipping the car over the rail and down a 30-foot embankment.
Officers called in a K-9 unit, as well as the Oak Forest Fire Department, to help track the suspect. The fire department's thermal scanner was used to check the area for possible traces of body heat that would lead officers to the suspect's location.
Officers did not locate the suspect.
Officers went back to Oliver's where they found a vehicle with a back window broken out. The owner of the vehicle said a black laptop bag and another black bag were missing from the vehicle. The two bags were located inside the crashed car.
Officers found the registered owner's driver's license in the crashed car. The suspect's parents came to the Oak Forest police station, where they told officers their son now lives in Harvey, although they did not know an exact address. His parents were advised to tell the suspect to come to the police station for questioning.
Charges are pending.
