Brian Urlacher No Longer a Chicago Bear: What Do You Think?
Should the Bears have offered more money to keep Urlacher in Chicago to finish out his career?
The Bears will open the 2013 season without Brian Urlacher running the defense. The 13-year veteran middle linebacker, arguably the most popular Chicago Bear of the last decade and a mainstay in the Bears defense, could not come to financial terms with the Chicago Bears.
The Bears offered a one-year deal for $2 million. Urlacher, 34, initially asked for two years totaling $11.5 million but says he would have settled for $3 million. Wednesday, he called the Bears offer "a slap in the face."
Urlacher's ubiquitous jersey could be seen on Bears fans of all ages and was among the NFL's most-sold jerseys through 2010. The eight-time Pro Bowler recorded 1,779 tackles, a Bears franchise record, and many believe he's a future Hall of Famer. In 2005, he was NFL Defensive Player of the Year, only the second Bear ever to achieve that.
As good as he was on the field, his off-the-field endeavors provided fodder for the tabloids. He hooked up briefly with Paris Hilton, and at the height of his popularity Urlacher fathered a child with a Joliet woman, Tyna Robertson. The two wound up in court feuding over child support and custody issues, with Robertson alleging Urlacher wasn't fit to be a custodial parent because he dressed their son in pink diapers and painted his nails in a Bears-blue polish. (What would Dick Butkus say about that?)
Two years ago, Bears legend Gale Sayers said Urlacher was old, "on the downside of his career" and probably couldn't handle business on the field anymore, prompting Urlacher to retort: "Does (Gale Sayers) know how to win football games? Does he? No."
Until last fall, he was in the thrall of comedienne Jenny McCarthy, a born-and-raised South Sider and Mother Mac girl who now lives in Geneva. Last year, Urlacher underwent knee surgery.
So, it looks like No. 54, one of the game's elite linebackers, will finish out his career with another team. Will you miss him?

Doug your correct, sad but true.
Farve left Green Bay for Minnesota.
Many other players of the NFL have moved onto to other teams because of salary caps, injuries, management changes.
Brian will always be a Bear no matter where he ends his career, just like Farve.
Brian good luck, hope you get a few more years out of body and have fun.....and of course make money isn't that what we all do get the most bang for buck.

That is what is wrong with this country...There is no LOYALTY anymore! Yes its all business Doug, the guy gives 13 years of his life to this team and they are going to let him go over a mill! What a joke... "Slap in the face" is a understatement! Remember this Doug when its your turn and company let's you go...you'll be crying like a little school girl! Loyalty is done in this country...has been for a while...sad!

What's wrong with this country is athletes, politicians, and "celebrities" get more money and attention than they deserve.
Loyalty? That's just a word some people use who can't perform at a high level anymore. When a company hires you they expect your best, nothing less, and then you may continue your employment. If you cannot deliver your best after X number of years, find something else to do.
BU has been well paid and neither party owes the other anything.

As a matter of fact I was let go last May from a company that I had worked for since 1981. I didn't leave "crying like a little school girl." I went out and found another job. Actually, I didnt find it, it found me. I had 2 job offers and took less money to be closer to home. I was loyal for 31 years. I was sad but not bitter. Its just business.

Urlacher didn't care about 'loyalty' when he held out twice for pay raises.

That is your definition of Loyalty? You made my point…and I’m sure your okay with dumping multi-million dollar contracts on these young guys who haven’t even proven themselves yet! Urlacher is a franchise player and deserves the money! You can’t even count how many millions of dollars he has made for this franchise! He is a proven player and to send him down the river over a million is a joke! Athletes and Celebrities are what's wrong with this country? Lets start at the top of the list; Corporate America, Corporate media, Banksters and Big Pharma...think you would have more ground for your argument as to what is really wrong with this Country!

BU has already gotten what he deserves (at least in the pro football world). I don't believe in "loyalty", I believe in keeping your word and performing at a high level. And keeping your word, by the way, is signing a contract and seeing it thru (not sitting out because you want more $$).
By the way, who do you think pays the salaries of these athletes like BU? Wait for it now....Corporate America. Big TV deals, endorsements, merchandising, etc. This is how owners make money. Ticket sales don't cover employee labor.
Nobody is sending anyone "down the river". And I didn't say athletes or celebs are what's wrong with this country. It's the attention and hero worship. Get a life.

No loyalty, you got to be kidding, Urlacher stopped being productive in the 2008-2009 Season, the Bears kept him way longer then they should have. In fact the NFL should find a way to get rid of the Virgina & Ed “Cheapskates” McCaskey’s, they are as non-productive as Urlacher, maybe even worse. They had a dynasty when they won the Super Bowl and could have dominated the NFC for at least five more years, but those cheap SOB'S didn't want to part with any money, so all of the players either signed with new teams and/or were traded. Chicago Bear Fans need some mental health screening, they buy season tickets, they pay for PLC's, they pay premium dollars for parking, and the owners field a team that goes 8 & 8 year in and year out. Quit supporting mediocrity and see how fast they put together a team that is competitive
in their division. Lovey Smith should have never been hired as a head coach, he might have been a decent defensive coach, but as a head coach, no way. Personally speaking I got very tired of it being 3rd and 13, and the Bears are still trying to run it up the middle. If I was able to call that play while sitting in a Sports Bar drinking Miller Lite, I think every defensive Line Men in the entire NFL knew that was going to be the play called. Cutler should be the next in line to go out the door, while they can possibly get some of their money back, what a joke he is too. Mike Singletary & Doug Buffone were better linebackers then Brian Urlacher ever was.

This is all hilarious...
Cutler is bad, urlacher is bad... and so on. So they have bad players and a cheap boss... Yet they won more under Lovie than most teams did in the NFL under the same span... yet Lovie is a bad coach. So they have bad players and a bad coach, yet won a lot of games? can't imagine how that happen? 8 and 8 every year? Sigletary a better linebacker? No
All genius work there JJ...

All good things and Careers must come to an end. I'm happy for Ray Lewis winning a ring, but he embarassed himself last year with his play. Unless BU has really improved on his abilities from last year, he would maybe be a 2 down player. It would have been hard for him to watch his replacement on the field.

I love it, these players always talk about how it a "business" when they are trying to get more money when they still have a contract, yet when the owners treat it like a business the players talk about loyalty and being insulted. Good riddance Urhlacher you over rated cry baby. Ten bucks says he will sign the lawsuit for concussions in a few years even though he said constantly that he would consiously go back into a game with a concussion.

I understand it, but I don't like it. Knowing that the Bears offered Brian $5.5 million for a 2-year deal, just a month ago .... well, maybe Brian should have taken THAT deal. He will be missed, and not just by the fans. There s no denying that the Bears defense was BETTER with #54 on the field. I predict a losing season, and will go as far as saying, they'll finish last in the division.

Brian started out well, but changed probably by the people he started to hang with,he became a wannabee, had marriage, child and women problems, his play and drive started to come down in his career, its to bad he seemed like a good kid,but then he seemed trouble,I always remember him when being interviewed he always kept his head down and his cap down covering his eyes and like in most jobs he started to lose his Godfathers and the new ones coming in felt like it was time to move on,"THATS LIFE".

I hate to see him go but in reality $2M is a good offer. His days of speed and ability are behind him.
I wouldn't bring loyalty into this. They offered $2M to a guy who has played 13 seasons and as of the last few years can not last the whole season. If anyone thinks he will suddenly be rejuvenated this year, they are mistaken. He should have swallowed his pride and played (or stayed) for $2M.
I'd like to see him stay just for his leadership qualities but the Bears can't pay more than their offer for that contribution.

He was a great player! That being said. If the Bear's offer to Urlacher was a slap in the face, his offer to them was ludicrous! You finished the last 2 years injured watching from the side lines. You've had major knee surgery. Your 34 years OLD and slower as in way. Singletary called it a career at 34 and he was healthy! Pity da fool that gives you $11.5 mil. IF your lucky! Your thought / reasoning process is GREED, in it's finest form! His attitude is typical as it was his entire career, all me. Listening to him last night on CSN whining and blaming everyone else! Mat Bowen said it in a nutshell! In free agency, your paying for the future, NOT the past! Urlacher's future done come and went! This comment was posted on 12/30/12 on FOX: Urlacher caught heat from fans and the media when he told FOX 32's Lou Canellis two weeks ago, "Two of the people I don't care about, fans or the media," Urlacher said. It is a business but THAT shows you his devotion to the team, fans and city!

pride always comes before a fall.
Urlacher could not negotiate a contract based on a realistic assessment of what his skills and abilities are at THIS point in time. $2 million per year was a very fair offer. I don't think any other team will offer him a higher amount. His career may be over.

J. J. Zurek must be eavesdropping in my house because that is everything we say every week. The 3rd down plays, the cheapness of the owners, Lovie as head coach. I mean, up the middle every time? It drives us crazy. But we love the Bears anyway and we want a winning team. Urlacher wasn't helping us win anymore.

The games i watched were when Cutler threw the ball more than they ran. What exact games were you watching. Lovie was a fine coach and won a lot games with no wr' s and no offensive line. He found the strengths of his team and made the best of them. What more would you want from a coach? So you wanted him to throw more? To who? Devin Hester? House full of idiots and yours and jj house.

Brian; thank you for your service, but the union and the owners have changed football from a game to a business.
You could have taken the 2 mil. stuck around, played your 10 -12 games before getting injured, and picked up your extra million or so in endorsements.
Good luck where ever you end up.

Hey JJ and JJR get a clue! The Bears spend as much money as any other team. Do you think the Julius Peppers signing was a cheap move? Its football, there is a cap, the Bears spend money. And the Bears had plenty of talent after the Super Bowl, they lost Marshall, thats it, and gained back holdouts Todd Bell and Al Harris. The only reason they did not win more Super Bowls was the health of Jim Mcmahon and the stubborness of Ditka starting guys like Doug Flutie.

I'd rather see the Bears spend that $2 million plus and have a capable back up QB, for when Cutler gets hurt. And with that offensive line he will get hurt. They need to release or trade Hester. He's overpaid, is not a reciever and can be replaced. Use Hesters money to sign another LB that can play the next 2-3 years. They do need to use the draft to get a linebacker and corner and another guard. The Bears are getting old FAST and need to start replacing the aging stars. I hate that football has become a business but sadly it has. If there's anger anywhere it needs to be directed at Angelo. He's the boob that let things get this bad, now its Emery's mess to try and put back togather
