Bark for a Park Crew Fetches $25K Prize: Newsmakers

These folks won't stop 'til their pups have a place to play. $25K richer, dog park committee eyes more fundraising efforts.

With Oak Forest's recent 2nd place finish in a national dog park contest, committee organizers aren't in much rush to spend the $25,000 won and, instead, are looking ahead to more fundraisers.

The committee has until August 2015 to spend the money Oak Forest won by taking 2nd place in the Bark for your Park contest, organized by pet product producer PetSafe. Laura Clemons, chair of the city's Bark for a Park committee, said they don't have any definitive plans for the money and do plan to continue ongoing fundraising efforts.

I understand that dog owners will have to show proof of their dog's current vacinations in order to be a "member" of the dog park. This is a responsible rule and one that most, if not all, dog owners wouild welcome. I wonder though, how will it be enforced?

GREAT question, Colleen. I bet Laura Clemons would be happy to answer. You can reach her at lclemons@oak-forest.org!

And when she gives you the answer, will you do me a favor and share it with us? :)

David B...Checking the tags would involve a monitor being there every hour of every day that the dog park is open and that would involve paying someone to do it. Unless they issue electronic cards to swipe at the gate, but that sounds too expensive also. Any other bright ideas David?

I checked with Laura Clemons and she said that after a dog's owner has provided written verification from their vet that the dog is up to date on vacinations, they will be given an I.D./Membership card and lanyard. There will not be a monitor at the park every hour of operation, however a monitoring group would be assigned to stop in from time to time to check for infractions. This group will have the authority to eject those not in compliance. Beyond that, dog owners will be on an honor system.
